Blessed At LastPsalm 27:10

Eighteen and a Black Bag

This message is for the young woman who aged out of care on her eighteenth birthday with her things in a black bin bag, and nobody standing at the door saying anything good after her

They give you the bin bags the day before. Two of them, folded, on the end of the bed, and nobody says anything mean while they are doing it.

That is the part people get wrong when you tell them. They picture somebody being cruel. Nobody was cruel. Your key worker was kind, actually, and she filled in the forms and got you the flat and drove you there herself and helped you carry the second bag up the stairs, and she had another appointment at two so she went.

Your birthday is on a Thursday. The date is the whole system. You turn eighteen and the file closes and the funding stops and that is not anybody in that house making a decision about you, that is a spreadsheet somewhere doing what spreadsheets do.

So you stood in the hall at ten in the morning with your whole life in two black bags, and the girl in the room next to yours was at college, and the man who did nights was asleep, and the telly was on in the front room with nobody watching it.

And you went out the door, and the door shut, and that was it.

It is eight months later. You have a flat and a job at the garden center and a plant you have kept alive since February, which everybody laughs at you about and which you are genuinely proud of. You are okay. You want that on the record. You are actually okay.

It is only that tonight somebody at work was talking about her daughter going to university and the whole family driving down with her and her dad crying in the car park, and something arrived in you sideways that you did not send for.

Nobody stood at any door and said anything good after you. Not that day. Not ever.

Eighteen and a Black Bag

There is a line written about exactly this

Okay. I want to go slowly here, and I want to be honest with you rather than nice to you, because I think you have had enough of nice. The Spirit is patient and so is what is written, so we are not in a hurry.

First thing, and I mean this: nobody is on trial in this article. Not your key worker, who was doing four other cases. Not your mum. Not the people in that house. I am not going to build you a case against anyone, because you did not come here for a case, and honestly a case would not have helped that Thursday either. The absence is real. An absence is a fact and not a verdict.

Second thing, and this is the one I actually want you for. There is a line in the Bible about this exact situation, and it is not a general encouraging thing, it is specific, and somebody wrote it down a very long time ago while it was happening to them.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.Psalm 27:10

Look at how ordinary that is. No drama. Not if. The man writing it is not speculating; he is describing an arrangement. When the people go, God picks up. That is a sentence somebody had to have needed in order to write, and it got kept, in a book, for thousands of years, and it is on the page in front of you tonight.

You have been taken up, and it happened on the Thursday, and nobody had to be there for it to be true. That is not me being kind to you. That is what is written, in the plainest words the Psalm has, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a sentence like that warm across thousands of years so it lands on a girl in a flat with a plant on the windowsill.

Here is the thing nobody ever explained. When a dad cries in a car park at a university, he is not making anything happen. He is agreeing out loud with something God already said about his kid. His voice is a door. God is the one walking through it. And if the power were in the voice, then a girl whose door was shut by a spreadsheet would be unblessed for life, and God has never once written a rule that stupid or that cruel.

You are not on a reduced version of anything, and there is no smaller portion for people whose paperwork ran out. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), all of it, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled thing out of a page and into a person. He is not rationing this by circumstance. He never has.

Why the bin bag is not evidence

Now, the harder bit, and I want to take it off you rather than argue with you about it.

Somewhere in the last eight months you have quietly concluded that the reason nobody stood at the door is that there was not much to say. That the girls with families get the car park and the crying dad because there is something about them worth driving down for, and you got two bin bags because there is not. You have never said that out loud. You have absolutely thought it at about eleven at night.

That is not realism. That is a girl marking her own paper in an empty flat, and what is written never once agreed with the mark. The Spirit is here to say that out loud where you can hear it.

God has known your name since before that house had a front door on it, and He has never confused you with a case number. It is written that He knew you before He formed you (Jeremiah 1:5), and that He has called you by name and you are His (Isaiah 43:1), and the same Spirit who breathed those lines is the one holding them up in front of you tonight, which is why they read like evidence and not like a poster.

And hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the bin bags were secretly fine, or that it built character, or any of that. It was ten in the morning and the telly was on with nobody watching it and that was a bad way to leave a house. I am not painting it. What I am telling you is that the good word was never attached to that hallway, so when the door shut, nothing of yours was left on the other side of it.

The send-off you did not get on your birthday was spoken over you before that house was built. God has blessed us, past tense, in Christ, and His word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one doing the carrying, tonight, in a flat with boxes still against the wall.

The breakthrough

So here is where we actually are tonight, and none of it is homework.

The blessing exists. God said it, He settled it in Christ before you were born, it is written down where anybody can go and check whether I am making it up, and the Holy Spirit is in this flat to make it live rather than just be correct. What was missing was never the blessing. What was missing was a voice, and you have one; you have been using it all day at a garden center telling people what to do about greenfly.

You are blessed, tonight, in a rented flat, and it does not matter one bit whether you feel anything while you read that. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling to receive something God had already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills it, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written down.

I am not going to tell you what happens next with your family. That is God's, and I have no authority to promise you a phone call or a car park or a crying dad, and I would not do that to you. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out loud where you can hear it: when the people go, the LORD takes you up, and He took you up on a Thursday morning while you were carrying a bag up a stairwell.

Somebody's daughter got a car park and a dad. You get the older sentence, from the One who wrote it, and He is not going anywhere at two o'clock.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing and say them out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally earned a turn. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, in your own flat, to the quiet that has been standing in that hallway with you for eight months. What God does about your family is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Black bag at the bottom of the stairs, you are not my send-off. Scripture says when my father and my mother forsake me, the LORD takes me up, and He has never once put me down.
  2. Mark I gave my own paper at eleven at night, get out of this flat in the name of Jesus. It is written that He called me by name and I am His, and He has never confused me with a case number.
  3. Lord, You are saying it over me now, in my own place, in Your own voice. I thank You, because Your face is shining and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing up in the middle of the room to hear it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
