He is seventeen and he is six foot one and he still ducks under your hand at the door like he is nine.
And every single time, the same words come out of your mouth. You have said them so many times they have worn smooth.
Phone charged. Text me when you get there. Hands out of your pockets. Do not run, whatever happens do not run. If anybody stops you, you keep your hands where they can see them and you say yes sir and you call me after, you call me straightaway.
He says yeah Mum. He says it kindly. He has been saying it kindly since he was about fourteen, in the voice you use for a person you love who is doing something you cannot stop them doing.
And tonight he went out and the door shut and you stood in the hallway with your hand still up, and something came at you sideways.
You started the list when he was twelve. He is seventeen. That is five years, and it is the last thing you say to him every time he leaves this house, and you cannot remember the last time you said anything to that boy at that door that was not about how to stay alive.
He is funny. He is genuinely funny, and kind to his sister, and he has a thing he does with his face when he is thinking. And none of that has ever once made it into the doorway.

The keeping was never assigned to you
Come and sit on these stairs with me. I am not going to tell you to stop saying the list. Do not brace for that.
Let me be clear about it, because Scripture would not let me be vague and the Spirit is not in the business of shaming a mother for keeping her child alive. That list is not a failure of love and it is not anxiety. It is instruction born of a real thing in a real world, and you did not invent the reason for it. Nobody in this house is on trial and neither are you.
But you have worked out tonight that a list is not the same as a blessing, and you were right to work it out, so come and look at who is actually on that door.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:8
Read whose job that is. Not the mother's. The psalm says it four different ways in eight verses, and it says it about the LORD every single time: He keeps, He does not slumber, He is the shade at thy right hand. It is a song about a person going out on a road, and it does not contain one instruction to the traveler. It is entirely about the keeper.
The keeping of your son is God's own work, and it was never handed to you to guarantee. That is not me lightening a load for a tired woman. That is what is written, and what the psalm assigns and to whom, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a mother sitting on her own stairs with the hall light off.
Here is what changes the doorway. When you speak a blessing over him, you are not manufacturing protection and you are not casting anything over his evening. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about him. Your mouth is a door. God is the one walking through it. Which means the words do not have to cover every scenario, and their weight is not resting on your ability to think of everything.
You have a word to say over that boy that is not a warning, and saying it takes nothing away from the list. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, settled, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven and into a hallway where a tall boy ducks under his mother's hand.
What five years of instruction taught him
Now let me name something carefully, and I want you to hear that I am not accusing you of it.
When the only thing a boy hears at his own front door is how not to be harmed, he learns something nobody meant to teach: that the world's opinion of him is the most important fact about him, and that his mother's last word before he goes is about danger. He knows you love him. He is not confused about that. But five years of doorways is a lot of doorways, and the shape of a thing repeated becomes the shape of the thing itself.
That is not a charge against you. It is what happens when love has to spend itself on survival for five years running, and what is written never once required a mother to do both jobs perfectly at the same door. The Spirit is here to hand you the second sentence, and it is short.
Your son is spoken of by God in terms that have nothing to do with what anyone out there thinks of him. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance but the LORD looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the same Spirit who breathed that line into an old prophet is standing in your hallway, which is why it lands as a ruling and not as a reassurance.
And hear what I am not doing, because this is where somebody in your position gets sold something dangerous. I am not telling you a blessing keeps him safe tonight. It is not a charm and it is not insurance and I will not stand here and imply it. God is the keeper, and God's keeping does not always look the way we would have written it, and I have no authority to promise you an outcome on a Friday night. Anybody who promises you that is selling you something.
What I can put in your hands is this: the word you speak over him will stand over his life, and it does not depend on whether he is listening. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a seventeen year old halfway out of a door with one earphone in cannot make it less true.
So here is what is true on these stairs tonight, with the door shut and the hall light off.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that boy was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words and it is certainly not your love. What is missing is ten seconds at a door and a sentence with no instruction in it.
You are the one God appointed to speak over your son, and being frightened for him has never once disqualified you from it. Nobody has ever had to be calm to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what tonight holds, or any night. That belongs to God, and He is the keeper and I am not, and I would not insult you or Him by pretending to know. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the LORD keeps his going out and his coming in, from this time forth, and that sentence was never assigned to you.
You have carried the keeping for five years at that door. Put it down for ten seconds and say the other thing, and let His Spirit carry it out into the evening after him.
Declare this over yourself
Say these tonight, standing in the hallway, out loud, before he comes home. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally stopped being afraid. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own son is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to the fear that has been standing in this doorway since he was twelve. What God does about tonight is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- List I have recited at that door since he was twelve, you are how I have loved him and you are not the last word over him. Scripture says the LORD keeps his going out and his coming in, and He has never once handed me that job.
- Fear that the world's opinion of my son is the truest thing about him, get out of this hallway in the name of Jesus. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance but the LORD looks on the heart, and He has seen the boy at my table.
- Lord, You are the keeper and I am the mother with her hand on his head. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my son out there tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and the next time that door opens I am saying the good thing first.
