Five Children and One Grace

This message is for the father of five who has said grace at that table every night for nineteen years and has never once spoken a good word over any one of them by name

You have said the same nineteen words before dinner every night since the eldest was four.

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive. Everybody knows it. The two youngest say it with you at double speed with their eyes open. Your wife closes hers properly. The eldest, who is twenty-three now and comes on Sundays with a girlfriend everybody likes, says it out of politeness and means it more than he lets on.

Nineteen years without missing. Through the year your mother was ill. Through the month you were out of work and there was less on the table than anybody mentioned. You have never once sat down and eaten without saying it.

And tonight there were nine of you and it was loud, and you got to the end of the plates and looked down that table at all five of them, and something landed on you out of nowhere.

You have never said one of their names out loud in a good sentence at that table. Not one, in nineteen years.

You have covered them. Every single night, you have covered them, as a group, in a sentence about food. And you have corrected them individually, and told them off individually, and asked about their exams individually.

But there is not one of those five who has ever sat at that table and heard their own name said by their father with something good after it.

Five Children and One Grace

Jacob did them one at a time

Sit down at the end of the table with me a minute, while everybody argues in the kitchen. This is not a rebuke, and Scripture will not let me turn it into one, and the Spirit is not standing behind you with a list.

Nineteen years of grace before a meal is not nothing. It is a man saying, every single evening, in front of his children, that this food came from somewhere and that the somewhere is God. Do you know how many tables have nothing said over them at all? Yours is not one of them. Nobody in this house is on trial and neither are you.

But covering is not the same as naming, and you know that now, so come and look at an old man blessing two boys.

And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh.Genesis 48:20

That is Jacob, nearly blind, at the end of his life. Joseph brings both sons in. And the old man does not bless the boys. He crosses his hands and he does them one at a time, he names them, he gets the order wrong on purpose and argues about it with their father, and the whole account is full of who is who.

The specificity is the point. He is not covering a group. He is speaking over a person.

Each one of your five is spoken of by God individually, by name, and He has never once handled them as a set. That is not me flattering a father at the end of a long meal. That is what is written, and what the passage does with names and hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a man looking down his own table on a Sunday.

Here is the part that makes this doable. When you speak a blessing over one of your children, you are not producing anything, and you are not creating a hierarchy. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about that one. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. Which means you do not need to be good with words, and you do not need to do all five tonight, and you do not need to make a speech.

You have a word to say over each of those five that has their own name in it, and God has never been short of it for any of them. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, settled, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven and into a room with too many chairs in it.

Why it has been a group all these years

Now let me name the reason gently, because I do not think it is what you fear it is.

With five, a father learns fairness before he learns anything else. Fairness is the whole architecture of a big family: same portions, same rules, same bedtime for the same age. And so a good word said to one, out loud, in front of the other four, starts to feel like a risk. Like an imbalance. Like something you would then owe the others by Tuesday.

So you have covered them together, which is fair, and it is also why not one of them has ever heard it.

That is not favoritism you have avoided. It is a good instinct that grew a wall, and what is written never once required a father to be simultaneous. The Spirit has never asked anybody to bless five people in one breath.

Blessing one child by name tonight takes nothing from the other four, because there is no fixed quantity of this and there never was. It is written that of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace (John 1:16), which is a sentence about a supply that does not run down, and the same Spirit who breathed it is standing at your table where the plates are still out.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to hold a ceremony, or to go around the table doing all five in a row, which would turn it into an event and every one of them would feel it. What I am telling you is that one, on a Sunday, in front of everybody, is how this starts, and that the other four watching is not a problem. It is the point. They will know it is coming.

What you say over any one of them stands over that child's life whether or not they know what to do with their face while you say it. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a twenty-three year old going red at his own table cannot make it less true.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at that table, with the plates still out and the kitchen loud.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before any of those five were born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your faithfulness. What is missing is one name said out loud with something good after it, and you are the only man at that table who can do it.

You are the one God appointed to speak over those five, and nineteen years of covering them has been the practice, not the failure. Nobody has ever had to be eloquent to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you how any of the five take it. I have no authority to promise you a moment, and one of them will very likely say something sarcastic, because that is what a family is. That belongs to God. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: an old man crossed his hands over two boys and named them as he went, and heaven wrote down which was which.

You have covered them for nineteen years. On Sunday, name one, and let His Spirit carry it down that table.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in the kitchen before Sunday, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because nineteen years of grace bought you the right. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own children is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to the fairness that grew into a wall around your own table. What God does in those five is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. One grace for the whole table, you are nineteen years of faithfulness and you are not a word over any one of them. Scripture says Jacob blessed them and named them as he did it, and God has never once found five children hard to tell apart.
  2. Fear that naming one of them out loud puts me in debt to the other four by Tuesday, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. It is written that of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace, and that supply has never once run down.
  3. Lord, You have never handled my children as a set, and You know every one of their names better than I do. I thank You, because Your face is shining on all five and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and on Sunday I am saying one of those names out loud with something good after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
