Over My ChildrenExodus 4:11

A Folder of Forms and a Boy

This message is for the father of a seven-year-old with complex needs, whose whole language about his son has become appointments, assessments and forms, and who wants one sentence over the boy that is not a case file

The folder lives on the hall table because it comes with you everywhere.

There is the education plan, which is forty pages. There are two reports from the same service written eleven months apart that disagree with each other. There is a photocopy of a photocopy of a letter from a consultant you saw once, which is what makes the thing that funds the other thing possible.

You know his numbers. You know the scores, the percentile, the wording of the paragraph that everything hinges on. You have learned an entire second language in seven years, fluently, out of necessity, and you can hold your own now in any meeting with anybody.

Tonight he is on the floor with the cushions off the sofa doing the thing he does with his hands when he is happy, and you are on the sofa with a cup of tea, watching him.

And a woman at work asked you today how your boy is, and you heard yourself answer for about ninety seconds, and every single word of it was from the folder. Waiting lists. The appeal. What the panel said.

She meant, how is your boy.

He is seven. He laughs at the same three seconds of the same song every time. He has to touch the doorframe. He is furious about socks. He puts his forehead against yours when he wants you to stop talking to other people.

And you cannot remember the last time you said anything about him out loud that was not in the language of a system.

A Folder of Forms and a Boy

God claimed the making of him

Stay on that sofa a minute. Do not put the tea down, and do not brace, because I have nothing to add to your workload and I am not about to explain your son to you.

Let me be clear about one thing before anything else, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not let me be careless: nobody is on trial here, and neither are you. The folder is not a failure of love, and the second language you learned is not a wall you built. It is a father getting his son what his son needs, in the only vocabulary the people holding it will accept. You did not choose that vocabulary. You became fluent in it because the alternative was your boy going without.

But you already know that a form is not a description of a person, or the question at work would not still be sitting in you at nine at night.

So come and look at a conversation between God and a man who was arguing about his own mouth.

And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?Exodus 4:11

I am going to be careful with this verse, because it is not an explanation and I will not use it as one. It does not tell you why. Nothing I say tonight will tell you why, and any man who offers you a why for your son is selling you something.

Here is what it does say. Moses is standing in front of God listing what is wrong with him: he is not eloquent, he is slow of speech, he is not the man for it. And God does not correct the list. He does not say Moses is mistaken about himself. He says: who do you think made a mouth. And then He sends him anyway, with the mouth he actually has, and He does it without ever once treating Moses as a case to be resolved before he could be used.

Your son is not a problem God is waiting to solve before He can say something good over him. That is not comfort I am handing a tired father on a sofa. That is what is written, and what the passage does with a man who thought he was disqualified by his own body, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a living room with the cushions on the floor.

Here is what changes tonight. When you speak a blessing over that boy, you are not making a claim about his future and you are not asking for a change in him. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about him. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. Which means it does not require an outcome, and it does not require him to respond, and it does not require you to know what any of it means.

You have a word to say over your son that is not an assessment, and no panel anywhere has authority over it. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, settled, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven into a room where a boy is happy about cushions.

What seven years of fluency has cost

Now let me name the thing carefully, because I think it is not what you would guess.

The folder language is not just how you talk to services. What is written knows the difference and the Spirit is not confused by it, but it is how you have started to think, because that is what a second language does when you use it every day under pressure. And there is a quiet effect of that which nobody warns a parent about: the child becomes the sum of what is being sought for him. Not because you love him less. Because you have spent seven years describing him to people who will only act on a deficit.

So the descriptions that get rehearsed are the ones that move a decision, and the ones that move nothing, the doorframe, the socks, the forehead, go unsaid until you cannot find them when a woman at work asks a kind question.

That is not a failure you committed. It is what happens to a language under pressure, and what is written never once required a father to hold two vocabularies at once. The Spirit is here to hand you back the other one, and it does not need to be long.

God has known your son by name since before the first appointment was ever booked, and He has never once confused him with what is being sought on his behalf. It is written that He knew him before He formed him (Jeremiah 1:5), a sentence with no assessment in it anywhere, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in your living room, which is why it reads as testimony and not as consolation.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to put the folder down or to fight less. Fight for every line of it. That is love and it is also the job and nobody else is going to do it for him. What I am telling you is that the fight and the description are two different things, and you are the only person alive who holds the second one.

What you say over him will stand over his life whether he can tell you what he heard or not. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and that is not a promise about the appeal, which is not mine to make. It is a promise about what a word of His does once it is spoken, and the Spirit is the one who carries it, and a boy on the floor with the cushions cannot make it less true.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in that living room, with the tea gone cold.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that boy was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words, and it is not your fight, and it is certainly not your love. What is missing is one sentence with no reference number in it.

You are the one God appointed to speak over your son, and seven years of forms has never once disqualified you from it. Nobody has ever had to be at the end of the process to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what the panel does, or what the next report says, or anything at all about how any of this turns out. That belongs to God, and I will not stand in your living room and pretend to know your son's road. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: God asked who made a mouth, and then He sent a man out with the one he had, and He never treated him as a case to be closed first.

You have spoken the system's language for seven years. Get on the floor tonight and speak the other one, and let His Spirit carry it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in the hall by that folder, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have fought hard enough this year. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own son is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, over a language you learned because you had to. What God does with that appeal, and with your boy, is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Folder on the hall table, you are what the system needs and you are not my son. Scripture says the LORD asks who made man's mouth, and He never once handed that question to a panel.
  2. Habit of describing my boy only in the words that move a panel, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. It is written that God knew him before He formed him, and there is no assessment anywhere in that sentence.
  3. Lord, You sent a man out with the mouth he actually had and never made him a case to be closed first. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my son tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am getting down on that floor to say his name.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
