Everyone We Know Heard His Version First

This message is for the young woman whose ex told a version of the breakup to their whole shared friend group before she had said anything, and who now watches him be liked in every room she used to be in

He had it out in about forty-eight hours, and you did not know until it had already gone everywhere.

Not a lie. That is the frustrating thing, and it is why you have never been able to explain this properly to anybody, including your own mother. It was true things arranged into a shape. It was the two months where you were not coping and none of the seven months before it. It was the thing you said in the car in December, quoted accurately, with nothing around it.

By the time you spoke to anyone, there was already a version, and every conversation you had was you correcting a version, which makes a person sound exactly like somebody with something to correct.

So you stopped. That was probably right and you would do it again.

That was fourteen months ago. Three people from that group still message you and two of them are genuinely great. The rest you see in photographs, at things, with him in them, and he looks well and easy and liked, and he is liked, because he is likable, which is the whole problem and always was.

You are okay. You have new people. Your job is better than it was.

It is only that you have a note on your phone that you started in the March, and it is now about nine hundred words long, and it is the reply. You add to it maybe once a fortnight. You are never going to send it. You know that. You add to it anyway.

Everyone We Know Heard His Version First

Overcome it with good

Come and sit on the counter a minute. I am not going to tell you what he did was fine, and I am not going to ask you to see it from his point of view.

Let me start with the true thing, because Scripture will not let me start anywhere else and the Spirit is not interested in making you reasonable: he shaped it, he got there first, and you lost a room you had every right to be in. That happened. Nothing in this article asks you to wonder whether you are remembering it generously enough, and God is not confused about the seven months you left out of nobody's version but your own.

Now come and look at a sentence that is a lot more practical than it sounds.

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.Romans 12:21

Notice what it does not say. It does not say win. It does not say correct the record, or produce the seven months, or get the group back, or wait for the day everybody works it out. It is not a strategy for reputation at all.

It is about what happens to you. Be not overcome. The danger the verse is actually worried about is not that his version stands. It is that a person shaped by fourteen months of drafting a reply slowly becomes someone the reply is making, and the writer of that letter has seen it happen and is trying to get to you before it does.

You are not required to win a room in order to be free of it, and that was never the deal. That is not me being kind to somebody who got outmaneuvered. That is what is written, and what the verse instructs and what it deliberately does not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and sets it down on a kitchen counter on a Tuesday.

Here is what nobody explains about blessing somebody who did this. When you say a blessing over him, you are not confirming his version, and you are not saying you are fine with it, and you are not being the bigger person for anyone's benefit. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about a person He made. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it. It signs no statement and it corrects no record.

A blessing said in your own kitchen does not concede one word of what he told them. Scripture says God will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5), which is a promise about what eventually gets seen and by whom, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that alive for somebody who has stopped expecting a group chat to be corrected.

What the note on your phone is doing

Now let me name the thing gently, because it is not what your friends would tell you it is.

That note is not pettiness. It is the only place your version exists. Everywhere else, the shape he made stands unopposed, so the note is where the seven months are, and where the context around the December quote is, and where you get to be a person rather than a character in somebody's account.

You need it to exist. That is honest and it is human. The problem is not that you wrote it. The problem is that maintaining it is a job, and the job is fortnightly, and it keeps him current. Fourteen months in, he is not a person you used to know. He is a live document.

That is not bitterness and I am not going to call it that. It is a true thing with nowhere to go, and what is written never once required you to be believed before you could be free. The Spirit is not asking you to decide the note was wrong. He is asking whether you want to keep the job.

God has the seven months, the December car and the shape he made, all of it, and He has never once needed your note to keep the record straight. It is written that He brings the hidden things to light and makes the counsels of the hearts manifest (1 Corinthians 4:5), and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in your kitchen, which is why it reads as a fact about the future and not as a nice thought about it.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to message him, to explain yourself to anyone in that group, or to turn up to a thing you would rather not be at. Blessing is not reconciliation and it is not access and nothing here asks you for a single word to his face. If you never speak to him again, that is entirely fine and it is not a spiritual failure.

What you say alone in a kitchen is a real thing, and it is complete whether or not one person in that friendship group ever hears about it. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and it does not need to reach a group chat to have been said.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in that kitchen, with the phone face down.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before either of you was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here to carry it. What is missing is not the truth about those seven months. What is missing is one sentence in place of nine hundred words, said out loud, with nobody listening.

You are free to bless somebody who has not earned it, and it hands him nothing and takes nothing from you. Nobody has ever had to feel generous in order to speak God's word over another person. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you whether anybody in that group ever works it out. That belongs to God, and He has said He brings hidden things to light, and I have no authority to tell you when or whether you get to watch. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: you were never asked to win. You were asked not to be overcome, which is a completely different thing and a much better one.

He has had fourteen months of your fortnights. Take them back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in your own kitchen, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally got over it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over another person is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a note you have been keeping current since the March. What God does about that group is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Reply I have written thirty times and never sent, you are drafted and you are not my life. Scripture says overcome evil with good, and God has never once asked me to win the room first.
  2. Habit of checking who is in the photographs, get out of this flat in the name of Jesus. It is written that God brings the hidden things of darkness to light and makes the counsels of the hearts manifest, and He has never needed my note to keep the record.
  3. Lord, You have the seven months and the December car and the whole of it. I thank You, because Your face is shining on me tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing in my own kitchen saying his name and the good after it instead.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
