She Is Getting the Job She Kept Me Out Of

This message is for the woman who was briefed against for two years by a manager who is now being promoted into the role she was kept out of, and who has to work out what her mouth does on Monday

The email came out at four twenty on a Friday, which is when they always come out.

You read it standing up in the kitchen at work with a teabag in your hand. Delighted to announce. A wealth of experience. Will be taking up the role from the first of next month.

You knew about the role. You applied for the role. You were told, in a fifteen minute conversation in a glass box, that you were not quite ready for that level of stakeholder complexity, which is a sentence you have taken apart word by word approximately two hundred times since.

And you know, because three separate people have told you in confidence and none of them will say it in a room, what has been said about you for two years. Not lies exactly. A tone. A little sigh before your name. She is great, she just. Two years of she just.

She has never once been anything but pleasant to your face. That is the part that makes you feel insane.

You are in the car park now. It is dark and the wipers are on and you have been sitting here for eleven minutes without starting the engine, and what is going round in you is not sadness. It is a case. A full case, with evidence, in order, that you have been assembling for two years and can present at any moment to a tribunal that does not exist.

And Monday morning you have to walk in there.

She Is Getting the Job She Kept Me Out Of

He said the repaying is His, and He said it out loud

Sit in this car with me a minute. I am not going to tell you it was fair and I am not going to ask you to be gracious about it.

Let me say the true thing first, because Scripture will not have me lying to a woman in a car park and the Spirit will not have me managing her: you were briefed against. That happened. Nothing in this article asks you to doubt what you know, or to consider that you may have misread it, or to be more generous in your interpretation. God is not confused about what was said in rooms you were not in.

Now come and look at where the file is supposed to go.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.Romans 12:19

Read it slowly, because there are two things in it and everybody hears one.

The first thing written there is the instruction: do not avenge yourself. That one gets preached constantly and it is usually where it stops, and stopping there makes it sound like the wrong just evaporates and you are asked to be fine. The Spirit did not stop there.

The second is the reason, and the reason is not that it did not matter. Vengeance is mine; I will repay. That is what is written, God saying in the first person that the case is not being dismissed. It is being moved. It has a judge, and the judge has the whole file: every sigh before your name, every conversation in every glass box, every word of what was said in that room you were not in.

Your case is already in front of somebody with jurisdiction, and it got there without you having to present it. That is not me consoling a passed-over woman. That is what the verse assigns and to whom, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that plain and lays it in a car with the wipers going.

Here is the piece that changes Monday. When you say a blessing over that woman, you are not withdrawing the case, and you are not saying it did not happen, and you are not being professional about it. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about a person He made. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it. It enters no plea and it drops no charge.

A blessing said over her on Monday concedes nothing, and it was never designed to be your way of coping. Scripture says God will bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday (Psalm 37:6), which is a promise about what eventually gets seen, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that warm for a woman who has stopped expecting a corrective email.

What it costs to be the one holding the file

Now let me name what has actually been happening to you, and I want you to hear that I am not scolding you for it.

Assembling that case has been survival. When somebody is polite to your face and something else behind it, the case is the only place your reality is confirmed. You need it. Without it you would have started wondering whether you imagined the whole thing, which is exactly what a two-year sigh is designed to do.

But holding a case open is a job. It requires you to keep the evidence live, which means rehearsing it, which means she is in your kitchen, your car, your Sunday, and your eleven minutes in a car park in the rain. She got the role. She does not also get your evenings.

That is not weakness in you. It is what happens when a real wrong has no address, and what is written never once made a rehearsed case the proof that something occurred. The Spirit is not asking you to drop the truth. He is asking you to put down a file that has an owner.

God has the file, He has the whole of it, and He has never once needed you to keep a copy in order to remember. It is written that vengeance is His and that He will repay, and the same Spirit who breathed that sentence is sitting in the passenger seat of this car, which is why it reads as a transfer of jurisdiction and not as a spiritual coping strategy.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to accept it, to stop applying, to withdraw a grievance if you have one, or to be quiet about a pattern that other women in that building are also experiencing. Blessing is not silence. It is not surrender. It is not a substitute for a formal process and nothing here asks you to close one. What I am telling you is that the case and the verdict are two different objects, and it is the verdict you have been carrying home.

What you say in a car park with nobody listening is a real thing, and it is complete whether or not she ever knows. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and it does not need to reach the first floor to have been said.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in this car, with the rain going and Monday coming.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before either of you was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here to carry it. What is missing is not the truth about those two years. What is missing is one sentence in place of another, said out loud, with nobody in the car but you.

You are free to bless a woman who has not earned it, and it takes nothing at all off your account. Nobody has ever had to feel gracious in order to speak God's word over another person. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what happens to her, or to that role, or to the pattern in that building. That belongs to God, and He has said the repaying is His and He said it in the first person, and I have no authority to hand you a timetable for it. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the case has a judge, the judge has the whole file, and He has never once lost a page.

She has had two years of your evenings. Monday morning, take them back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting up in that car, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have managed to stop being angry. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over another person is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a case you have been holding open in a tribunal that does not exist. What God does about that woman and that role is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. File I have carried on her for two years, you are heavy and you are not mine to hold. Scripture says vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord, and He keeps the repaying in His own hands in the first person.
  2. Fear that if I put the case down I will start wondering whether I imagined all of it, get out of this car in the name of Jesus. It is written that God brings righteousness forth as the light and judgment as the noonday, and He has the whole file including the rooms I was not in.
  3. Lord, You are the judge with jurisdiction and I am the woman in the car park. I thank You, because Your face is shining on me tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and on Monday I am saying her name and the good after it before I go through those doors.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
