Four forty-seven. You have looked at the timestamp so many times that it is now simply a number you own.
Friday. Thirteen minutes before the end of the day and the end of the week, sent to a list, with your name in a group of eleven. The word used was realignment. There was a paragraph about the difficult decisions and a paragraph about support available, and there was a line, and you have never got past this line, that thanked everyone for their contribution during this period.
Nineteen years is not a period. Nineteen years is most of your working life.
You know who wrote it. Not the name at the bottom, that was the regional director who has never met you. You know who actually drafted it, because you know how that man writes, and there is a phrase in the second paragraph that you have heard him say in meetings for six years.
You did the handover properly. You trained your own replacement without being asked and you did it well, because you were not going to become somebody who did it badly.
That was two years ago. You have work now. It is fine, it is closer to home, the people are decent.
And you are standing in your own hallway tonight with your coat still on because you have just come in, and you have been having the conversation again. The one where you say it to him. You have been having it for two years and it is now word perfect and it has never once been said to another human being.
David put his hand down before anything was settled
Take the coat off and stand here a minute. I am not going to tell you it was handled well, because it was not.
Let me name it before anything else, because Scripture would not have me be delicate about a real thing and the Spirit does not require a man to be reasonable before He will work: nineteen years ended in a group email at thirteen minutes to five on a Friday, and the word for that is cowardice, and the phrase during this period was written by somebody who did not want to think about you for very long. That happened, and nothing in this article asks you to be fair to it.
Now come and look at a man in a cave with a knife and a very good reason.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.1 Samuel 24:12
David. Hiding in a cave from a king who is hunting him for nothing, and that king walks in alone and defenseless, and David's men tell him this is God handing it to him.
Look carefully at the order of what he says, because it is the whole thing. He does not say it does not matter. He does not say Saul is misunderstood. He says the LORD judge between me and thee, which is a man asking for a verdict, out loud, because he believes he is owed one.
And then, in the same breath, before any verdict has been given, before anything has been settled or explained or put right: mine hand shall not be upon thee.
He puts his hand down first. The judging goes to God and the hand comes down, and the second one does not wait for the first.
You are permitted to put your hand down before you get your verdict, and Scripture has already shown you a man doing exactly that. That is not me managing a man who was treated badly. That is the order of what David said, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a hallway with a coat still on.
Here is what nobody explains about blessing a man who did that to you. When you say a blessing over him, you are not withdrawing your claim, and you are not saying four forty-seven was acceptable, and you are not being professional. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about a man He made. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it. It drops no case and it excuses no paragraph.
A blessing said in your own hallway does not give him nineteen years back, and it was never designed to. Scripture says the LORD is a God of judgment (Isaiah 30:18), which is not a comfort about feelings but a statement about jurisdiction, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that live for a man who is never going to be in a room with that manager again.
What the speech costs to keep
Now let me name the thing precisely, because you are a man who has been named vaguely by professionals for two years and you deserve better than that. What is written is exact, and the Spirit does not do management speak.
The speech is not revenge. You would not deliver it if he walked in here. What the speech is, is the only place where the nineteen years get stated correctly. Nobody at that company ever said them out loud. The email did not. The handover did not. Your leaving do, which about nine people came to, did not.
So the speech is the record, and rehearsing it is how the record stays true, and that is why it has survived two years and a new job and a shorter commute.
That is not bitterness, and I am not going to insult you by calling it that. It is a true thing with no address, and what is written never once required a man to be acknowledged before he could be free. The Spirit is not asking you to say nineteen years were a period. He is asking whether you want to keep delivering a speech to an empty hallway.
God has the nineteen years in full, including the parts nobody at that company ever knew about, and He has never needed your speech in order to have them. It is written that God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love (Hebrews 6:10), and the same Spirit who breathed that line was in the building for every one of those years, which is why it lands as a record and not as a sentiment.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to contact him, to send anything, to accept an explanation you never got, or to be at peace with a company. Blessing is not reconciliation. It does not require you to think well of a decision. If you never say that man's name to another living soul, that is entirely fine.
What you say in your own hallway is a real thing, and it is complete without that man ever knowing it happened. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and it does not need to reach a head office to have been said.
So here is what is true in that hallway tonight, with the coat off now.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before either of you was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here to carry it. What is missing is not the truth about nineteen years. What is missing is one sentence in place of a speech, said out loud, with nobody listening.
You are free to bless a man who has not earned it, and putting your hand down costs you nothing you are actually owed. Nobody has ever had to feel forgiving in order to speak God's word over another man. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens to that man, or to that company, or whether anybody there ever thinks about the eleven names on that list again. That belongs to God, and He is a God of judgment, and I have no authority to put a season on His verdict. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: David asked for the judging and put his hand down in the same breath, and he did not wait to be vindicated first.
He has had two years of your hallway. Take it back tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in that hallway, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally made your peace with a group email. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over another man is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a speech that has been word perfect for two years and has never had an audience. What God does about that man is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Speech I have carried for a man who will never hear it, you are word perfect and you are not my life. Scripture says the LORD judge between me and thee, and David said it with his own hand already down.
- Habit of explaining nineteen years to people who did not ask, get out of this hallway in the name of Jesus. It is written that God is not unrighteous to forget a work and labor of love, and He was in that building for every one of them.
- Lord, You are the God of judgment and the judging was always Yours. I thank You, because Your face is shining on me tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing in my own hallway with my hand down and his name in my mouth.
