She rang on a Tuesday, which is the part you keep turning over, because Tuesday is the day you always did it.
She was kind about it. She was more worried about how you would take it than she was about herself, which tells you a great deal about that girl and always has. She said they had both tried. She said there was nobody else involved. She said it was not one thing, it was four years of a hundred small things, and that she was tired.
You said the right things. You said you loved her and that nothing about this changes anything and that she can come and stay whenever she wants. All of it true and all of it said properly, and you meant every word.
Then you put the phone down and sat in that chair without turning the lamp on.
Four years. Every Tuesday. Never missed. You would sit in this chair with your tea going cold and say a blessing out loud over those two, by both their names, and you would say it as though they were standing in the room.
You did not tell her. You never told her. It was not a thing you did for credit and you would be mortified if anybody found out.
And now it is Tuesday, and you are in the chair, and the tea is going cold, and the marriage is over, and there is a sentence forming in you that you do not want and cannot stop.
What was the point of it.

Sow in the morning and in the evening
Sit still a while. Do not turn the lamp on yet. I am not going to hurry you out of this.
Let me put a hard true thing down first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit will not have me being clever with a woman in that chair: you did not fail. Nothing in this article is going to suggest that a different word, or more faith, or saying it daily instead of weekly, or naming something more specifically, would have held that marriage together. Anybody who implies that to you is guessing, and they are also making you responsible for two other people's decisions, and God never once did that.
Now come and look at a verse written by a man who had thought very hard about outcomes and could not get them to behave.
In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.Ecclesiastes 11:6
Read the reason he gives. He does not say sow because it always works. He says sow because you do not know which one takes.
That is not resignation. It is the opposite. He is saying that the not knowing is precisely the argument for sowing in the morning and the evening both, because a person who only sows where they can see a result will end up sowing almost nowhere, and a person who sows in ignorance covers ground.
And that whole chapter is written by somebody who has watched things not turn out. He is not naive. He has been round the houses on this and he has come back with an instruction rather than a formula.
Your four years were sowing, and Scripture never once made the seed's worth conditional on the harvest you could see. That is not me comforting a woman on a bad Tuesday. That is the reason the verse itself gives, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a front room with a phone in a lap.
Here is what nobody explains about speaking a blessing over other people. When you said those two names on a Tuesday, you were not securing anything and you were not underwriting a marriage. You were agreeing out loud with what God had already said. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it, and He has never once been obliged to report back, and He does not command another person's will, and neither did you.
A blessing is not an input, and a marriage is not its readout. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us (Deuteronomy 29:29), and the Spirit has never handed anybody a way of checking. What was revealed to you was that a woman speaks good over her family. That part you did, faithfully, two hundred times.
The sentence you do not want
Now let me name the thing that is forming in you, because I would rather say it out loud than let it settle in the dark.
What was the point of it.
That sentence is not rebellion. It is arithmetic arriving where arithmetic does not belong. Four years, two hundred Tuesdays, and one visible outcome, and a mind that has been doing sums since it was a girl puts those together and gets a ratio, and a ratio turns a blessing into a transaction that failed.
And a woman who concludes that quietly stops doing it. Not with a decision. She just does not, next Tuesday, and then not the one after.
That is not faithlessness and I will not call it that. It is what happens when love and a measurable event sit in the same room for four years. And what is written never once invited you to compute it, and the Spirit is not sitting in the other chair with the figures.
God did not ask you to hold that marriage together, and He has never once made another person's choices the grade on your obedience. It is written that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son (Ezekiel 18:20), which is God separating accounts on purpose, and the same Spirit who breathed that is in this room while the light goes, which is why it lands as a ruling and not as a kindness.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the marriage will be restored if you keep going, and I am not telling you it will not. That is not mine to hand you and I would not trade it for four years of your faithfulness. And I am not telling you what she should do next; she is a grown woman and she is tired and she has told you the truth.
What I can put in your hands is this: two hundred Tuesdays did not come back to God empty, and every one of them was spoken over a girl who is still alive and still yours and is going to need somebody at four in the morning in about a month. God's word does not come back to Him void (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and the marriage was never the only thing you were blessing.
So here is what is true in that chair, with the phone in your lap and the light nearly gone.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that girl was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit has carried every one of those two hundred Tuesdays out of this room. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your faithfulness. There is no missing piece and there never was one.
You have been doing the only part that was ever yours, and the part you are grading yourself on tonight was never assigned to you. Nobody has ever had to see a result in order for God to have received what was spoken. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens to that marriage or to either of them. That belongs to God, entirely, and He may answer in a way neither of us picks, and anybody who hands you a timetable is taking something from you. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: sow in the morning and in the evening withhold not thine hand, for thou knowest not which shall prosper, and the not knowing was the reason he gave for carrying on.
She rang on a Tuesday. It is still Tuesday. Say it over her tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting in that chair, out loud, tonight, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because four years produced something you can point at. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own granddaughter is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a sentence that started forming the moment you put the phone down. What God does with either of those two is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Four years of Tuesdays with that marriage in my mouth, you are said and you are not undone by a phone call. Scripture says sow in the morning and in the evening withhold not thine hand, for thou knowest not which shall prosper.
- Sum that says two hundred Tuesdays and one outcome, get out of this front room in the name of Jesus. It is written that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, and God separated those accounts Himself and never once put another grown person's choices on mine.
- Lord, You never asked me to hold that marriage together and You never told me which seed takes. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my girl tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am turning this lamp on to say it over her one more time.
