Over My ChildrenDeuteronomy 6:7

I Close the Book and Turn Off the Lamp

This message is for the father who has read to his six-year-old every night for four years and has never once said anything of his own after the last page, because the book has always done the talking

Three chapters is the deal, and three chapters is what he gets, and he negotiates for a fourth every single night with the confidence of a man who has never once won.

You are good at this. You do the voices. You have read that particular book so many times you could do it with your eyes shut, and there is a bit in the fifth chapter where you always slow down because he always goes very still there.

Four years. Almost no exceptions. You have read to him in a hospital chair, in a caravan in the rain, on the two nights his mother was away and neither of you would admit to being unsettled about it.

And then it ends the same way every night. You close the book. You say right. He says one more. You say goodnight, mate. You put the book on the shelf and you turn the lamp off with the switch on the wall and you pull the door to about a hand's width, because more than that is dark and less than that is too bright.

Tonight you pulled the door to and stood on the landing, and something occurred to you that you had genuinely never thought before in four years.

Every night of his life, the last voice he hears is yours, saying somebody else's words.

Thousands of pages. Wonderful ones, some of them. And you have never once, after the book closed, said anything of your own over that boy.

I Close the Book and Turn Off the Lamp

God named that hour on purpose

Stand on the landing a minute. It is quiet and I am not going to make more of this than it is, but I am also not going to make less.

First, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not let me do it any other way: four years of reading to a child every night is not a failure of anything. It is one of the more faithful things a person can do and almost nobody manages it. You have given that boy a nightly hour with his father's voice in it, and that is not a substitute for love, it is love, in an unusually consistent form. Nobody is on trial here.

But you have noticed something real, so let me show you where it points.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.Deuteronomy 6:7

Look at what is being named. Four hours, and they are not liturgical hours. Sitting in the house. Walking on the road. Lying down. Getting up. God is not describing a service. He is describing the ordinary structure of a day and He is saying: put My words into all four of them.

When thou liest down is in there deliberately. The last hour of the day is named, in a list, by God, as one of the places His words belong.

You are already standing in one of the four hours God named, and you have been standing in it every night for four years. That is not me making a small thing large for a father on a landing. That is what is written, and what the verse lists and what it puts in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a hallway with a door open a hand's width.

Here is what changes tomorrow night. When you say a blessing over your son, you are not adding a religious layer to bedtime and you are not making it heavier. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about him. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. Which means it does not need to be long, and it does not need to be well delivered, and it does not need him to be awake enough to remember it.

You have eight seconds available after the book closes, and God has already put words in them. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, settled, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven into a small room with a nightlight in it.

Why the book has been doing the talking

Now let me name it precisely, because vagueness would be no use to you and you would see through it anyway.

A book is a wonderful thing to hide behind. Not dishonestly. It is simply that a story gives a man a way to be warm for forty minutes without ever having to say a sentence in his own voice about his own child. The affection is entirely real, and it is carried entirely by somebody else's words, and no vulnerability is required from beginning to end.

And after four years of that, the eight seconds after the book closes have become the hardest eight seconds of the day, because they are the only ones with nothing to hold.

That is not cowardice and I am not going to call it that. It is what happens when a good habit quietly becomes a shelter, and what is written never once asked a father to be comfortable before he spoke. The Spirit has not been waiting for you to feel ready.

Your own voice over your own son is not an addition to what you have been doing; it is the part of it that has been outsourced. It is written that God told the priests to put His name upon the people, and He would bless them (Numbers 6:27), which is God keeping the blessing as His own work and assigning a person nothing but the saying of it, and the same Spirit has been running it that way ever since. Your part is small on purpose. It is also the part that cannot be read out of a book.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to stop reading, or to swap the chapters for something devotional, or to turn bedtime into anything. Keep the three chapters. Keep the voices. Keep refusing the fourth. What I am telling you is that the eight seconds after are yours, and always have been.

What you say over him will stand over his life whether he remembers a word of it or not. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a six year old already half asleep and still negotiating cannot make it less true.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on that landing, with the door pulled to.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that boy was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not the four years. What is missing is eight seconds and a man willing to sound strange in his own son's bedroom.

You are the one God appointed to speak over that child at that hour, and He named the hour before you were born. Nobody has ever had to be at ease to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what it does to him. I have no authority to promise you a memory in twenty years or a moment tomorrow night, and you would notice immediately if I tried. That belongs to God. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: God listed lying down among the hours His words belong in, and you are in that hour every single night at about half past seven.

You have given him thousands of pages. Give him eight seconds of your own, and let His Spirit carry them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing on that landing, out loud, tonight, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because four years of chapters finally earned it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own son is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to eight seconds that have been the hardest of the day for four years. What God does in that boy over the next twenty years is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Last page of somebody else's book, you are four years of good nights and you are not my voice over him. Scripture says talk of them when thou liest down, and God named that hour on purpose.
  2. Shelter I built out of a good habit so I would never have to say a sentence of my own, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. It is written that God puts His name on His people and does the blessing Himself, so the only part that was ever mine is the saying.
  3. Lord, You named lying down as one of the hours Your words belong in, and I am in it every night at half past seven. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my son and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and tomorrow I am taking the eight seconds after the book.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
