The Key in the Door

This message is for the man whose key in the front door makes the kitchen go quiet, who knows the atmosphere in his house is his own and wants to speak peace over it from the doorway tonight

He hears it before they do. His own key in the front door, and the half second of quiet on the other side of it.

The kitchen is full. His wife is at the stove with her back to the hall, the boy is at the table with a maths book open and a pencil in his teeth, the little one is under the table with the dog. The radio is going. And when the door shuts behind him the radio is somehow the only thing in the house still making a sound, because everything else in that room has drawn in its breath a little, the way a house does when the weather comes in with a man.

He did not shout. He has not shouted in months. He knows exactly what the shoulders in that kitchen are waiting to find out, and he knows they are waiting on him. It comes to him with his coat still on and his hand on the door frame that nobody set that atmosphere except him. Not her. Not the boy. Not the little one under the table. Him. His moods have been the weather in this house for so long that his own children read the sky before they say hello.

That half second is yours. The house you walk into every evening, and the way it holds its breath to see which version of you came home. Nobody has to say it. The room already knows how to wait for you, and it learned that from somewhere, and the somewhere is the doorway you are standing in.

The Key in the Door

The weather in a house has a source

Let us name it plainly, because it does no good to walk around it. The atmosphere in your house has been set by your mouth. Not by the children being difficult, not by your wife's tone, not by the job or the drive home. Those things happen in every house. What the people in your kitchen brace against is you, and the hardest part of that sentence is that you already knew it before you read it here.

I am not going to make it worse. A man who has seen this about himself does not need it explained twice. He needs to know whether there is anything he can do about a house that has learned to flinch, and the answer is that there is exactly one thing in that kitchen that is yours to govern, and it is the same thing that set the weather in the first place. Your mouth. Not their reactions, not the years already gone, not whether they trust you again by the weekend. Your mouth, in the doorway, tonight.

Here is what Jesus put in seventy-two mouths before He sent them out to houses they had never been in.

Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace be to this house!" And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.Luke 10:5-6

First say. Before the meal, before the news, before anybody had worked out whether the visitors were welcome. The first thing through the door was a blessing, and it was not a wish. It was peace He already had for that house, put into a sentence short enough to say on a threshold.

You have that sentence. It was written down so it could be carried into houses by ordinary people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it past your teeth and into the room. That was true for fishermen who had never blessed anything, and it is true for the man with his coat still on.

What the words do, and what they do not

Now the part this site is careful about, because it matters more here than almost anywhere. The words do not do it. If you take away from this that a sentence in a doorway will fix a house by its own force, you have picked up a lever and not a blessing, and a lever is the last thing your kitchen needs from you. What Jesus told the seventy-two, and what Luke 10:6 keeps for us, was to say out loud what God already had for that house. The peace was His. The saying was theirs. Whether it settled or came back to them was the business of His Spirit and not of their delivery, and He told them in the same breath that either way, nothing they said would be wasted.

Read that last clause again, because it is the mercy in the passage. If the peace does not rest tonight, it returns to you. It is not lost. It is not spent. Nobody in that kitchen has to receive it correctly for God to have meant it, and you do not have to say it well for Him to carry it. A father does not bless a house because it has earned a blessing. He blesses it because he is the one standing in the door.

You are in Christ, and He is the peace you are speaking. That is not my idea about you. Colossians 3:15 says His peace is meant to rule in the heart, and Ephesians 2:14 says He Himself is our peace, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that peace present in a room rather than merely mentioned in it. When you speak peace over your house you are not describing a mood you hope for. You are naming a Person who is already there.

And you were never left to fix that kitchen out of your own supply. Whatever you have run out of, and I suspect it is patience and it is late in the day, is not the thing the blessing draws on. Scripture says the peace of God passes understanding, which is another way of saying it does not come from the man who is saying it, and His Spirit brings it into rooms that have not settled yet.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true tonight, before the key is in the door.

You have the standing to bless that house. Not because you have been gentle in it lately, but because Christ is in you and He is the one whose peace it is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the carrying. The written words of Jesus to seventy-two nervous men on the road are the same words on the threshold of your kitchen.

You do not need a new tone of voice, a family meeting, or a week of proving yourself first. Those things may come and they may be good, and none of them is what the blessing waits on. It waits on your mouth, and your mouth is available tonight.

The house is under God's word from the moment you say so, and it is out from under your mood. I want to be honest with you about what that does and does not mean. It does not mean the children forget. It does not mean your wife exhales on the first night. It means the peace that rules that room has been named out loud, and it is His and not yours, and Scripture says what He speaks does not come back to Him empty. The Spirit is at work in a kitchen the moment His peace is spoken there, whether or not anyone's shoulders drop.

You are not the weather any more. You are the man in the door who says what the weather is, on the authority of the One who told him to, and that authority was given to you and not earned by you. His word is what stands over the room. His Spirit is what carries it in.

Declare this over yourself

Say it in the doorway, and say it out loud, because the seventy-two were not told to think peace at a house. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak peace over this room is His authority delegated to you and not something the family has to grant you first. It rests on His word and it is carried by His Spirit, and neither of those depends on how well the sentence comes out. Jesus said that whoever speaks to a mountain and does not doubt in his heart has what he says, and the mountain in this house is small and old and has your name on it: the belief that the atmosphere is set for good. Speak to it. Whether the room settles tonight or in a year is His to decide, and the peace you speak is not wasted either way.

  1. Kitchen, you are under the word of God and not under my mood, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Peace be to this house, the way He told the seventy-two to say it at the door, and His Spirit is the one who carries it in past me.
  2. Fear that I have already ruined this house, get out. Scripture says the peace I speak rests where it is received and comes back to me where it is not, so nothing said at this door is wasted, and the Spirit of God is not finished with the man who says it.
  3. Lord, You are the peace of this house and I am only the one standing at the door. I set down on this threshold what I have carried in for years, and I thank You that Your peace goes in ahead of me tonight, and Your Spirit rests on this room.
