The Word WorksHebrews 11:13

I Blessed Him Every Visit and He Never Once Answered

This message is for the man who spoke a blessing over his father at the end of every single visit for the last two years of the old man's life, and never once got a word back, and buried him in the spring

Ninety-one visits. You know the number because you kept the mileage for tax and never took it off the sheet.

Two years, most weeks, an hour and forty minutes each way, and at the end of every single one you stood up, put your hand on his shoulder, and said a blessing over him out loud. In the chair by the window, in the room that smelled of that place, with the television on because it was always on.

He never once answered.

Not because he could not. That would be easier and you would have made your peace with that years ago. He could talk. He talked about the food. He talked about a man down the corridor who he did not like. He asked after your brother, twice, and asked after your wife by the wrong name, which you never corrected because it did not matter.

But the second you started saying it, every time, he looked at the television. Every time. Ninety-one times. And when you finished he would say something about the tea, or nothing at all, and you would say right then, Dad, and go out to the car park.

You buried him in the spring. It was a decent turnout and your brother spoke well.

And what you have been carrying since, and have said to nobody, including your wife, who would be gentle about it and that is exactly why you have not, is this: I said it ninety-one times and he never once let one syllable of it land, and now the man is dead, so what was that.

I Blessed Him Every Visit and He Never Once Answered

They died not having received it

Lean on that gate a while. There is nothing to get to and I am not going to tell you he heard more than he let on.

Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit will not let me flatter a man at a graveside: I do not know what happened in your father. Nobody does. Anybody who tells you with confidence that it went in, or that it did not, is guessing at a thing God did not put on view, and I am not going to guess at you after ninety-one visits.

And here is the other true thing, and it is the one I actually came to say: you did not do it wrong. Nothing in this article suggests that a different tone, or a better moment, or turning the television off, or waiting until he looked at you, would have got you an answer. You are not being graded on a man who looked at a screen.

Now come and look at a list of people who did not get what they were promised.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.Hebrews 11:13

That is the middle of the chapter everybody quotes for faith that works, and this verse is the hinge of it, and almost nobody preaches it.

These all died in faith, not having received. Not delayed. Not eventually. Died without it. And the chapter does not present them as failures or as cautionary tales or as people whose faith was found wanting. It presents them as the roll of honor.

Which settles something enormous: in Scripture's own accounting, a life of faithful words with no delivered result is not a failed life. It is the standard case.

Two years of unanswered blessing puts you in the eleventh of Hebrews and not in the dock. That is not me making a graveside feel better. That is what the chapter says about people who died without receiving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a churchyard gate at the end of the day.

Here is what nobody explains about blessing somebody who will not receive it. When you said those words over your father, you were not operating on him. You were agreeing out loud with what God had already said about a man He made. Your mouth was a door. God was the one going through it, and He does not require the man in the chair to look up in order to come through, and He has never once been obliged to show you what He did in there.

A blessing is not an input, and a man's face is not its readout. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us (Deuteronomy 29:29), and the Spirit has never handed a son a meter. What was revealed to you was that a man speaks good over his father. That you did. Ninety-one times.

The count on the mileage sheet

Now let me name it plainly, because it is sitting in a spreadsheet on your computer and it has been doing something to you.

You know the number. Ninety-one. And a number in a mind with a habit next to it makes a ratio without anybody choosing to: this much said, this much answered. Ninety-one and zero.

And a ratio like that does one of two things to a man. It either stops him doing it with anybody else, quietly, permanently, or it turns into a verdict on the old man that he says to himself in the truck.

That is not bitterness and I am not going to call it that. It is arithmetic in the wrong room. What is written never once invited you to compute it, and the Spirit has not been keeping that column.

God did not put your father's response on your account, and He has never once made another man's face the grade on a son's obedience. It is written that every one of us shall give account of himself to God (Romans 14:12), himself, which is God separating the ledgers on purpose, and the same Spirit who breathed it is standing at this gate, which is why it reads as a ruling and not as a consolation.

Hear what I am not doing, and this one matters. I am not telling you that he received it in the last week, or in his sleep, or at the end. I have no idea and neither does anybody else and I am not going to hand you a comfortable story about a man I never met. And I am not telling you that ninety-one visits earned anything, because that would put you straight back in the transaction you are trying to get out of.

What I can put in your hands is this: ninety-one blessings did not come back to God empty, and their worth was never resting on whether he turned his head. God's word does not come back to Him void (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a man who drove three hours and twenty minutes a week for two years to say a good word into a television set has done something heaven wrote down.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at that gate, with the light going long across the grass.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before your father was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit carried every one of those ninety-one out of that room past a television set. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your faithfulness. There is no missing piece and there never was one.

You did the only part that was ever yours, and you did it ninety-one times with no encouragement whatsoever. Nobody has ever had to see a response in order for God to have received what was spoken. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what happened in your father. That belongs to God, and it always did, and I would not insult you or him by inventing an ending. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: they all died in faith, not having received, and heaven put their names in the roll of honor and not in the margin.

Ninety-one times into a television. Say it once more at that gate.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at that gate, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because ninety-one visits bought you anything. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over another man is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a column on a mileage sheet that has been doing sums since the spring. What God did in your father is His to decide and His alone, and none of it was ever yours to produce.

  1. Two years of a room where nothing came back, you happened and you are not the measure of what was said. Scripture says these all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off.
  2. Ratio of ninety-one and nothing that has been running since the funeral, get off this gate in the name of Jesus. It is written that every one of us shall give account of himself to God, and He separated those ledgers Himself.
  3. Lord, You went through that door ninety-one times past a television and You never once needed him to look up. I thank You, because Your face is shining on this grass tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing at this gate saying it over him one more time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
