Half past four, the little one, because she is asleep by seven and cannot wait.
Six, your middle one, before training, and it has to be something that will not sit on him, and he eats standing up with his bag already on.
Around half seven, you, mostly, while you are doing something else, and honestly it is often what is left in the pan and you have long since stopped counting that as a decision.
Half past nine, him, when he gets in, and by then the kitchen has been cleared twice and you reheat it and you sit with him for a bit if you are still up.
Four suppers. Every weekday. That is the shape of this house and it has been the shape of this house for about three years and there is no version of it that changes while the shifts are the shifts and the training is the training.
Somebody at church did a thing on family mealtimes in the spring. There was a printed sheet.
You put it in the drawer.
Not because you disagreed. Because there was nothing on it that could survive contact with your Tuesday, and because underneath the sheet was a picture of a table with everybody at it, and you looked at that picture and did the arithmetic and concluded, quietly, that this is not a house that has a table to bless.

The command attaches to the eating
Stop for a second while that pan is on. I am not going to hand you a sheet.
Let me say the true thing first and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit will not have me shaming a woman running a household on four shifts: nothing about this house is a failure. Four suppers between half four and half nine is what a family looks like when three people have different lives and one person is holding all of them together. You did not choose the training schedule and you did not choose the shift pattern. Nobody in this kitchen is on trial, and neither is the woman who printed the sheet.
Now come and look at where the command actually attaches.
When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.Deuteronomy 8:10
Read the trigger. When thou hast eaten and art full. Not when the household is assembled. Not at a set hour. Not once, in one room, with everybody present and a candle lit.
The command is fastened to a fed body. Every time somebody in your house is full, the condition in that verse has been met, and it has been met four times a day in this kitchen for three years.
Your house does not have one table a day, it has four, and God has never once written a rule that made the smaller ones not count. That is not me being kind to a woman with a pan on. That is what the verse attaches to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a kitchen at six with a bag by the door.
Here is what nobody explains about saying something over food. When you speak over a plate, you are not conducting anything, and you are not requiring anybody to stop or to sit or to hold hands. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about His own provision. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. It works exactly as well over a plate being handed to a boy with his coat on.
One sentence over one plate is a whole blessing, and four of them is not four fragments of one. Scripture says every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving (1 Timothy 4:4), and there is no clause in it about attendance, and the Spirit is the one who makes that live in a kitchen rather than merely be correct on a sheet.
What the picture on the sheet did
Now let me name what actually happened in the spring, because it was not a disagreement about mealtimes.
The picture on that sheet handed you a standard, and you measured your house against it in about a second and a half, and the house came up short, and the conclusion you reached was not we do it differently, it was we do not qualify.
And a woman who has concluded that her house does not qualify stops trying at all, quietly, without announcing it, and puts the sheet in a drawer.
That is not cynicism and I will not call it that. It is what happens when a good thing gets illustrated with one picture, and what is written never once required a household to be assembled before a word could be said over its food. The Spirit is not grading your Tuesday.
God is at every one of those four suppers, and He does not attend the half past nine one less than the half past four one. It is written that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there He is in the midst (Matthew 18:20), a sentence that goes deliberately as low as two, and the same Spirit who breathed it is in this kitchen at every one of the four, which is why it lands as a fact about your house and not as an encouragement to try harder.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to get everybody round the table on a Sunday, or to start a tradition, or to institute anything that you will be dreading by the second week. Nothing here is a program and nothing here is inspected. If it happens over two plates on Wednesday and none on Thursday, nothing is lost.
What you say over a plate as it goes past is a real thing, and it is not a reduced version of a proper grace. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a boy with his bag already on cannot make it less true over his own dinner.
So here is what is true in this kitchen, with one plate out and one waiting.
You are running four tables and not none, and God has never written a rule that made the smaller ones stop counting. That is what is written about a fed body and a blessing that fastens to it, and the Spirit is at every one of the four.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before any of those three were born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here at half four and at six and at half seven and at half nine. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not a dining room. What is missing is one sentence over one plate, said out loud, to the person holding it.
You are not disqualified by your own timetable, and there is no reduced grade of blessing for a scattered house. Nobody has ever had to have everybody present to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what it does to those four. I have no authority to promise you a reaction, and one of them will almost certainly say something. That belongs to God. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the command in Deuteronomy fastens to a fed body, and there are four of those in this house every single weekday.
You have been running four tables for three years and calling it none. Tonight, say something over one of them, and let His Spirit carry it out of the room with them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing at that counter, out loud, before the first plate goes, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because your house finally looks like the picture. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own house and its food is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a conclusion you reached in about a second and a half in the spring. What God does at those four suppers is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Four separate suppers between half four and half nine, you are how this house runs and you are not a disqualification. Scripture says when thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD, and it fastens to the eating and not to the gathering.
- Conclusion I reached in front of a printed sheet that this house does not qualify, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. It is written that where two or three are gathered He is in the midst, and He went deliberately as low as two.
- Lord, You are at every one of these four and You do not attend the late one less. I thank You, because Your face is shining on every plate that leaves this counter and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am saying it out loud over the next one.
