Bless The TableLuke 24:30

One Sentence Before Anybody Eats

This message is for a mother and her grown son at the same small kitchen table every night, the television on, two plates, and nothing ever said over the food

The rice is on the plates and the little television on the counter is doing the weather, and the two of them sit down the way they have sat down every night since he moved back: her nearest the stove, him nearest the door, the salt between them like a border post.

She has been meaning to say something over the food for two years. Not a speech. She is not a speech person. Something. In her mother's kitchen, a long time ago, somebody always said something before the first fork moved, and it was short and nobody looked up, and it held the room together the way a nail holds a picture. Here there is no nail. There is the weather, and the sound of his fork, and the thing she keeps almost saying and then not saying because it would sound like church, and they do not do church at this table.

He is a good son. He washes up. He asks about her knee. He puts his phone face down when he sits, which she has noticed and never mentioned, the way you do not mention the things you are most grateful for in case naming them frightens them off. And every night the two of them eat, and nothing is said over it, and the food is fine and the silence is fine and something in her stays hungry after she is full.

That is your table. Two plates, or one. A counter, a lap tray, the good table nobody uses. Somebody who loves you across it, or an empty chair you have stopped looking at. And the same thing hanging over the food that has hung there for years: the sentence you have not said, because saying it would make it a ceremony, and you were never trying to hold a ceremony. You were only trying to say that God is here.

One Sentence Before Anybody Eats

The road ended at a table for two

Come with me to Emmaus, because I need you to count the chairs.

You are sitting at the kind of table that account is about, and there is no smaller version of it kept aside for two people and a television. That is what is written about a house at Emmaus, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled thing out of heaven into an ordinary kitchen at seven in the evening.

Two of them, walking home on the worst evening of their lives. Not twelve. Not a crowd on a hillside. Two, and a stranger who fell in beside them and would not stop opening the Scriptures to them until they reached the village. And when they got to the house, they did the ordinary thing. They asked him to stay and eat. There was no altar in the room and nobody in a robe. There was a table, and bread, and it was getting dark.

When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed it and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.Luke 24:30-31

Read what He did with the bread. He blessed it. One sentence, in an ordinary house, over an ordinary loaf, at a table with two people at it. And that is where they knew Him. Not on the road while He was preaching. At the table, when He said the word over the food.

So hear this now, at your own table, with your own two plates. You have a table that God is already at. I am not asking Him to come to it tonight; He came to a house in Emmaus with two people in it and I am telling you what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it true in your kitchen and not only in theirs. The Lord is not waiting for you to say the right thing before He sits down. He is at the table before you are.

It was never a performance

Now let me name the weight, because it has been on you a long time, and I know the shape of it.

You think the sentence has to be good. You think that if you say something over the food it has to sound like something, and that if it comes out thin the silence would have been more honest. And underneath that is a smaller, older fear: that a household like yours does not do this. That blessing a table is for the family with the long table and the six children and the grandmother who leads the singing, and yours is a woman and her son and a television on the counter.

I need you to hear how wrong that is, and I need you to hear it from the Word and not from me.

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.1 Timothy 4:4-5

Made holy by the word of God and prayer. Not by the length of the prayer. Not by the size of the table. Not by whether the person saying it grew up doing it. Rice and beans on two plates, received with thanks and a sentence, is a holy meal. Scripture does not grade the sentence, so I do not either, and neither does the One who was listening in Emmaus.

You are not being marked on this. Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a plain sentence up from a plain table, so the thing that makes it a blessing was never how it sounded coming out of your mouth. That is written, and I am only handing it back to you.

And be careful with me here, because a site built on speaking things out loud is one sentence away from teaching you that the words do the work. They do not. Your sentence over the rice does not make the food safe, or the evening kind, or your son stay. It names what God has already settled: that this table is His and He is at it. We say the finished word. He sends the current, and He sends it as He pleases. What is said at the table is said over you, and it holds until morning, not because you said it well, but because He said it first.

The breakthrough

Here is what happens now, and it is not a technique.

You are at a table where the Lord has already taken His seat. That is not my hope for you; it is what Luke 24 shows and what the Spirit of God makes present in every house where His name is said. And the sentence you have been not saying for two years is one sentence long. It does not need to be beautiful. It needs to be said.

The mustard seed thing Jesus talked about was never about the size of what you feel. It was about the size of what is required, and the size is small: a word, spoken to the thing in front of you, believing that God is who He says He is. The mountain at your table is a silence, and the silence has been running your suppers. You do not have to argue with it. You speak over it, once, and let God be at the table He is already at.

You were given a mouth for exactly this, and I say that on the ground of Numbers 6, where God put His own blessing into the mouths of ordinary men and told them to say it over the people, and on the ground of the Holy Spirit who has never once needed a person to be eloquent before He would carry what they said.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud at the table, before the fork moves. Christ is in you, and the Word puts a two person table in Emmaus at the center of the resurrection story, so the authority to name what this table is has been given to you and it is not borrowed from anyone with a longer table. The Holy Spirit carries the sentence; you only say it. And then you leave the outcome with Him, because a blessing names what God has already said and never obligates Him to produce anything on your schedule. Whatever your evenings become, that is His. Tonight you say the word.

  1. Table, you are God's tonight and He is at you before we are. The Word says He took bread at a two person table in Emmaus and blessed it, and I say so over this one in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of sounding foolish, you do not get a chair here. Scripture says the meal is made holy by the word of God and prayer, and it never once asked how the sentence sounded. The Holy Spirit carries the word, and I carry the fork.
  3. Lord, You are at this table, and what is said here is said over us. I thank You, because Your Spirit holds the word until morning, and I am not the one holding it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
