The last car pulls out of the gravel at twenty past nine, and you are alone with sixty chairs.
It was a good night. You know it was a good night. Marcus came forward about his brother and you put both hands on his head and spoke over him until he stopped shaking. The Dunlop girl asked for prayer about the scan and you held her mother's hands and blessed the pair of them by name. Somebody's father, visiting, seventy-something, wept the whole way through and you knelt on the floor in front of him in your good trousers and told him what God says about a man who comes home late.
Nine, maybe ten people, and you laid hands on every one of them and meant every word.
Now you are stacking chairs. Six to a stack, the way they fit through the storeroom door. The heating clicks off. You find a hymn book under row four and a child's glove, and you put them on the windowsill for the morning.
And halfway through the fourth stack you stop, holding a chair by its back, and a thought arrives that you have been outrunning for about eleven years.
Nobody has ever done that for you.
Twenty-two years in this room. Hundreds of heads under your hands. And not once, not at your ordination, not at your father's funeral, not in the week your daughter was in the hospital, has one person laid their hands on you and spoken something good over your life on purpose.

The one who blesses is not the source of the blessing
Let me stand next to you for a minute before I say anything, because I know that room and I know what nine twenty feels like in it.
Here is the first thing, and I want it plain, because Scripture will not let me start anywhere else and the Spirit will not let me start unkindly. Nobody in that congregation is guilty tonight. They do not withhold it. It genuinely never occurs to them, because you have been the hands for so long that you have stopped registering as a man with a head. That is not cruelty. That is what happens to a person who is very good at one thing for twenty-two years. The absence is real and it is not a verdict, and I am not going to hand you a grievance against people you love.
What I want to do is show you where the blessing actually comes from, because I think you know the doctrine and have never once applied it to yourself.
And without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.Hebrews 7:7
That is written about Melchizedek and Abram. Abram is the father of the faithful, the man the whole covenant runs through, and on the road home from the slaughter of the kings a priest comes out with bread and wine and blesses him. Abram, blessed. The greatest man in the Old Testament standing still with somebody else's hands over him.
And the writer of Hebrews makes the point you need: that priest is a picture of Jesus, a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Which means there is a greater One, and He is still doing the thing that priest did.
You have already been blessed by the greater, and it was not a ceremony you missed. It is written down. Hebrews says He ever lives to make intercession for those who come to God through Him, and the Holy Spirit who breathed that line is in this hall with you now, standing in the room the last person walked out of. I am not comforting you with a nice thought. I am reading you the job description of your own High Priest.
Here is what nobody explains at ordinations. When you put your hands on Marcus tonight, you did not manufacture anything. You agreed out loud with what God had already said about him. Your hands were a doorway. God was the one walking through. And if the power sat in the hands, then a pastor whose people never thought to lift theirs would be an unblessed man, and God has never written a rule that cruel or that stupid.
The blessing you have been handing out all night was never yours to run out of, and it was never yours to be left outside of. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing, past tense, finished (Ephesians 1:3), and the Spirit is the one who takes a settled thing in heaven and warms it into a man holding a chair by its back.
What twenty-two years of laying hands actually proves
Now let me take something off you, because I think you have been carrying it and filing it under humility. What is written will lift it, and it is the Spirit who does the lifting.
Somewhere in you there is a quiet conclusion that this is simply the cost. That shepherds do not get shepherded, that it comes with the office, that a man who wanted hands on his head should have wanted something less holy. You have preached submission and service so long that you have started using them to explain why you go home empty.
That is not humility. That is a man doing his own accounting in the dark, and Scripture has never once entered that figure against you. The Spirit is here to say so.
God has never once mistaken you for a function, and He has never confused the shepherd with the staff in his hand. He calls Himself the Shepherd of the shepherds, and Peter, who knew exactly what your Sunday nights feel like, wrote that the Chief Shepherd will appear, and that the God of all grace Himself will settle and strengthen you (1 Peter 5:4 and 5:10). Himself. The Spirit put that word in the sentence for men in exactly your position, and it has been sitting there waiting for you for twenty-two years.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you that the empty room is secretly a blessing so that you will feel better about locking up alone. The empty room is empty and I will not paint it. I am telling you that the blessing was never wired to arrive through this congregation, and the fact that it did not come that way is not evidence that it did not come.
You are the one that priest came out onto the road for. That is what is written, and the Spirit is the one applying it. Not the strong version of you that stood up front. You, at nine twenty, with a glove on the windowsill and a thought you have outrun since 2015. That is the reading of Hebrews and the Spirit is the one applying it, and He does not require you to be presentable first.
So here is what is true in that hall, right now, with four stacks done and two to go.
The blessing exists. It was settled in Christ before you were born, it is written down where anybody can check it, and the Holy Spirit is present with you tonight to make it live rather than merely be accurate. What was missing was never the blessing. What was missing was a voice, and you have spent the whole evening proving that yours works.
You are blessed, at nine twenty, in an empty room, and nothing about how tired you are changes one word of it. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling in order to receive from God. Faith is an open hand, not a performance, and it is His Spirit who does the carrying; what He carries is what is written, and what is written says has blessed.
I am not going to tell you what happens next in that congregation. I have no authority to promise you that somebody stands up next month and lays their hands on you, and I would not insult you by pretending I do. What I can tell you is what is already finished, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the greater One has blessed you, and He was doing it while you were kneeling on the floor in your good trousers in front of somebody else's father.
You have been the doorway all night. His Spirit is standing in it with you. Stand in it yourself before you lock up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, out loud, in the room. You have the standing to say them, and not because twenty-two years finally bought you a turn. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His authority handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to the empty chairs, and leave the outcome where it belongs, because what God does with this congregation is His to decide and none of it is yours to produce.
- Empty room, you are not my verdict. Scripture says the lesser is blessed by the greater, and the greater One laid His hands on me before I ever laid mine on anybody.
- Quiet conclusion that shepherds do not get shepherded, get out of this hall in the name of Jesus. It is written that the God of all grace will Himself settle and strengthen me, and Himself is the word that has been sitting there the whole time.
- Lord, You came out onto the road for me tonight, with the chairs half stacked. I thank You, because Your face is shining on a tired man and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing here with my own hand on my own head for the first time in twenty-two years.
