Thanked a Thousand Times

There is a shoebox on the top shelf of your wardrobe with fifty years of thank you notes in it.

You have never counted them. You know roughly what is in there. The card from the Hendersons after the twins were born, when you did their washing for six weeks. The one from your son's teacher in 1987. A folded piece of paper from a grandchild, in pencil, that says THANK YOU FOR THE PIE in letters that get smaller as they run out of room.

Every one of them is true and every one of them is kind and you have kept every one, and that is not nothing.

Tonight you are at the sink with the water going cold and the last of the good dishes to do, because it was Sunday and there were fourteen of them and you would do it again next week. Somebody's husband said thanks Nana on the way out, twice, and he meant it. Your daughter hugged you by the car and said you are a marvel, you know that, and she meant that too.

And you stood there with your hands in the water afterward and something turned over in you that has never turned before.

Nobody has ever said anything about you.

They say thank you for what you did. They have been saying thank you for what you did since Eisenhower. Not one person, in seventy-four years, has stood in front of you and said something good about who you are, on purpose, out loud, with nothing to be grateful for attached to it.

Thanks is for a deed. A blessing is for a person.

Now hold still a minute, because I want to say a hard true thing gently.

Thank you and a blessing are not the same animal, and most people go a whole life without noticing. Scripture keeps them apart on purpose, and the Spirit is going to keep them apart in this kitchen. Thanks looks backward at a deed. A blessing looks straight at a person. Thanks is a receipt. A blessing is a naming. You have had a thousand receipts and never once been named, and that is why the shoebox is full and you are still standing at a cold sink at half past nine feeling like you have been left off something.

Nobody in that family is on trial here. They are not withholding. Nobody taught them. They grew up in a house where the way you said the good thing was to say thanks for the pie, and they say it as hard as they know how. Tired people, loving people, do not always have the words. The absence is a fact, and a fact is not a verdict.

Now come and look at where the words came from in the first place.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.Genesis 12:2

Read that twice, slow, the way you read a recipe you do not trust. There are two halves and they come in an order. I will bless thee, and thou shalt be a blessing. God says the first half. Then He hands out the second.

You have been living the second half since 1971. Everybody in that house has eaten off the second half. And the first half, which came first, which came before there was anything to thank you for, has never once been read over you.

The first half is yours, and it was yours before you ever baked anything. God said I will bless thee to a man who had done exactly nothing yet, and it is written that way on purpose. The Holy Spirit does not put a sentence in that order by accident, and He is the one standing at your elbow at this sink making a written thing warm. That is not me being nice to a tired woman. That is the order of the words.

You did not earn your way into the second half, and you cannot fall out of the first. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), settled and finished, and the Spirit is the one who carries that from a page into a person. Your hands never bought it. Your hands were the second half all along.

What the shoebox is actually evidence of

Now let me take something off you, because you have been carrying it and calling it not making a fuss. What is written will carry it out of here, and the Spirit is the one carrying.

Somewhere in you, sometime around the fourth funeral or the tenth Christmas, you decided that the reason nobody says anything about who you are is that there is nothing much to say about it. That the pies were the point. That a woman is what a woman does, and you did plenty, and you should be grateful for the notes and get on.

I have known women like you my whole life and I am going to tell you plain: that is not modesty. That is a woman doing her own sums with the light off, and Scripture never once agreed with the total. The Spirit is here to say so out loud.

God has known your name since before that farmhouse had a foundation, and He has never once confused you with what you were carrying out of the oven. Scripture says He knew you before He formed you (Jeremiah 1:5), and the same Spirit who breathed that line is the one holding it up in front of you now, at the sink, with your sleeves wet.

And hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the shoebox was secretly a blessing so you will feel better about it. Those are receipts and I am not going to call them something they are not. I am telling you the blessing was never fastened to the pies, so the pies running out never could have taken it.

The good word you have been waiting seventy-four years to hear was spoken before there was a single thing to thank you for. That is written, in that order, in Genesis 12, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a sentence that old and lays it on a woman standing in her own kitchen tonight. His word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11). Not this one. Not tonight.
