Blessed At LastEphesians 1:3

The Middle Son Pours the Tea

This message is for the middle son who has carried the tea tray at every family gathering for forty years and has never once had a good word said over him by name

The courtyard smells of charcoal and mint, and there are nineteen people around a table built for twelve.

Your uncle stands up with his glass. He toasts your eldest brother, who has done well, and everybody knows the story of how well he has done because it gets told at every gathering, and it is a good story, and it is true. Then he turns to your youngest brother, the one who was sick as a boy, and the whole table softens the way it always does, and somebody says God kept him, and somebody else says amen, and your mother touches his face.

You are in the doorway with the tray.

You are always in the doorway with the tray. Small glasses, hot to hold, three fingers of tea and a leaf of mint in each one, and you know without counting who takes sugar. You have carried this tray at engagements, at funerals, at the two nights after your father died when nobody slept. Forty years of it. You are not bitter. That is the strange part, and you want it said plainly: you are not bitter. You would carry it again tomorrow.

It is only that tonight, halfway back to the kitchen with nine empty glasses, something arrived that you did not send for. Nobody has ever stood up and said your name on purpose. Not once. Not for anything.

The Middle Son Pours the Tea

The words were never your uncle's to invent

Let me say the true thing first, and let me say it slowly, because it deserves that.

There is a sentence you never got. It was supposed to be spoken over you by somebody close enough to say it, and it was not. Your uncle is not on trial in this article. Neither is your mother, who touched a face that nearly died and did not think about the doorway. People who are busy loving one person are rarely cruel to another. They are just busy. The absence is a fact, and a fact is not a verdict, and I am not going to hand you a grievance you did not walk in with.

What I want you to see instead is where the sentence actually came from.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.Ephesians 1:3

Read the tense. Not will bless. Has blessed. It is finished work, done in Christ, sealed before your uncle owned a glass to raise.

Every spiritual blessing that exists is already yours in Christ, in full measure, tonight, with the tray still in your hands. Not a portion held back until somebody in that courtyard remembers you. The whole of it, written in the past tense on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is in this room right now doing what He was sent to do, which is take a settled thing in heaven and press it warm into a man standing in a doorway. I am not being generous with you. I am reading you a sentence God wrote in the past tense.

Here is what nobody explains at these tables. When a father blesses a son, he is not manufacturing anything. He is agreeing out loud with something God has already said. The mouth is a doorway. God is the one walking through it. And if the power were in the mouth, then a man whose family never opened theirs would be unblessed for life, and God never wrote a rule that cruel.

You are not on a shorter list. You are not the leftover portion. Scripture says the blessing of Abraham comes on the nations in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit (Galatians 3:14), and the promise of the Spirit is exactly the thing that carries a written blessing into a man who has never heard one spoken aloud. The Spirit is not rationing this. He has been waiting to say it.

What forty years of pouring actually proves

I want to take one accusation off you before we go further, because I think you have been carrying it and calling it humility. Scripture is going to do the lifting in this section and the Spirit is going to do the carrying, and neither of them is waiting on your permission.

You have decided, somewhere down in you, that the reason nobody says your name is that there is nothing to say. That the eldest had achievement and the youngest had a story and you had a tray. So the silence is not an oversight. The silence is accurate.

It is not accurate. It is only silence, and silence has never once been evidence. What is written is evidence, and the Spirit is the one who brings it into a room and sets it down in front of a man.

God has known your name since before that courtyard had a wall, and He has never once confused you with the thing you were carrying. He calls the servant of all the greatest of all, and He was not being polite when He said it. That is Mark 10:43 and 44, and the same Spirit who breathed that sentence out is holding it open in front of you tonight, which is why it reads like testimony instead of encouragement. He watched every glass.

And hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the tray was a secret honor so that you will feel better about the doorway. I am telling you the blessing was never attached to the toast in the first place. It was attached to Christ, and you are in Him.

The good word you have been waiting forty years to hear was spoken over you before anyone had the chance to withhold it. God has blessed us, past tense, in Christ. His word does not come back to Him empty, and the Spirit who carries it is the one who makes it land in a chest that is fifty two years old and still hears itself called nothing but the middle one. That is Isaiah 55:11 doing its own work, not mine.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in this room, and none of it is homework.

The sentence exists. God wrote it, He settled it in Christ before you were born, and the Holy Spirit is with you as you read this to make it live rather than merely be accurate. What was missing was never the blessing. What was missing was a voice, and you have one. You have been using it all night to ask people whether they take sugar.

You are blessed, right now, in Christ, and how you feel while you read that changes nothing about whether it is true. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling to receive a word from God. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does not wait on your emotional weather before He carries a word in. He carries what is written, and what is written says has blessed.

I will not tell you what happens next in that courtyard. That belongs to God, and I have no authority to promise you a changed uncle or a raised glass next spring. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written down and I am only reading it out loud where you can hear it: you were blessed in Christ, by name, before the first pot of tea was ever boiled in that house.

Your brothers got a toast. You get the older sentence, and the truer one, from the One who wrote it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, and say them out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally earned a turn. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His authority, handed to you, and carried by His Spirit. Scripture puts it plainly: whoever says to the mountain be removed, and does not doubt, shall have what he says. Says. So say it, in your own kitchen, to the silence that has been standing in that doorway with you. What God does with the courtyard is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Tray in my hands, you are not my name. God says He blessed me in Christ with every spiritual blessing, and He said it before a single glass was raised in that courtyard.
  2. Conclusion that the silence about me was accurate, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the servant of all is the greatest of all, and God has never once confused me with the thing I was carrying.
  3. Lord, You are saying it over me now, in my own house, in Your own voice. I thank You, because Your face is shining and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing here with my hands empty for the first time all evening.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
