Thirty Years Over This House and It Is Exactly As Ordinary As Everyone Else's

This message is for the man who has spoken a blessing over his household every week for thirty years and has just noticed, at a neighbor's barbecue, that his family is in every measurable respect exactly as ordinary as the family next door

It was a barbecue. That is the ridiculous part and you keep coming back to it.

Your neighbor's fiftieth, in his garden, on a Saturday, with about thirty people and a gazebo that did not fit properly. You have known him twenty-two years. He is a decent man, funny, entirely uninterested in any of this, and has been perfectly straightforward about it for two decades.

And you were standing there with a paper plate, next to his son, who is doing well, and his daughter, who has just had a baby, and his wife, who was making everybody laugh, and it landed on you sideways.

Their family and your family are, by every measure available from a garden, exactly the same.

Two grown children each. Both sets doing all right, both sets with something difficult in the middle of them that everybody knows about. Similar marriages. Similar amounts of trouble in the last decade, similar amounts of laughing.

And you have said a blessing over your house every week for thirty years.

Every Friday evening, standing in the same place in the hall, out loud, over that house and everybody in it. Through three children, one bereavement, a stretch of unemployment nobody outside the family knows about, and about fifteen hundred ordinary weeks.

Fifteen hundred. And from over a fence on a Saturday afternoon, there is nothing to see.

Thirty Years Over This House and It Is Exactly As Ordinary As Everyone Else's

God asked that question because somebody had

Sit at that table a while. I am not going to tell you the difference is there and you are not looking properly.

You are not the one despising anything in this, and that question was never aimed at a man who kept going for thirty years. That is what is written and who Zechariah put it to, and the Spirit is the one who has carried fifteen hundred Fridays out of that hall without publishing a single one of them.

Let me put the true thing down first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit will not have me flattering a man at fifteen hundred weeks: you have not been doing it wrong. Nothing in this article suggests that a different form of words, or more expectation, or claiming something more specific over that house, would have produced a visible difference. Anybody who tells you that is guessing, and what they are doing is making your neighbor's family into your control group, and God has never once run that experiment.

And there is something else I want said plainly before anything: your neighbor is not on trial in this article either. He is a decent man who has never pretended to be anything else, and his family is good, and nothing here needs his life to come out worse for yours to have meant something.

Now come and look at a question God asks, in a book almost nobody reads, in the middle of a very small building project.

For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel.Zechariah 4:10

The context is a second temple going up, and it is smaller than the first one, and the old men who remembered the first one had wept when they saw the foundation of this one because it was so obviously less.

And God asks that question. Not rhetorically in the sense of it being empty. He asks it because somebody has done exactly that: somebody has looked at a small, ordinary, unimpressive thing and written it off, and God stops the whole prophecy to name it.

The interesting part is who does the despising in that passage. It is not the pagans. It is the faithful. It is people who cared enough to be there and had a picture in their heads of what it should have looked like.

Fifteen hundred Fridays are a day of small things, and God has already asked, out loud, in writing, who dares to despise one. That is not me consoling a man after a barbecue. That is the question the verse puts and who it is aimed at, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it at a garden table on a Sunday afternoon.

Here is what nobody explains about blessing your own household. When you say those words in your hall on a Friday, you are not building something visible. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it, and He has never once undertaken to make the result inspectable from a neighbor's garden.

A blessing is not an input, and a comparison across a fence is not its readout. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us (Deuteronomy 29:29), and the Spirit has never handed a man a control group. What was revealed to you was that a man speaks good over his own house. That you have done, fifteen hundred times, standing in a hall.

What actually happened at that barbecue

Now let me name it precisely, because you are a precise man and something specific happened on Saturday and it was not a discovery. What is written is exact about this, and the Spirit is not accusing you of doubt.

You ran a comparison. Two families, one fence, one afternoon, and a set of measures that a garden can supply: how the children turned out, how the marriage looks, how much laughing there is.

Every one of those measures is real. None of them is illegitimate. But notice what they have in common: they are all things that show, and they are all things that show now, and the entire method was constructed on a Saturday out of what was standing in front of you holding paper plates.

And the conclusion it produced was not my house is bad. It was there is no difference. Which is a much quieter thing and much harder to argue with, and it went in without resistance because it arrived looking like an observation instead of a judgment.

That is not doubt and I will not call it that. It is a method producing exactly the result its instruments allow. And what is written never once handed you those instruments, and the Spirit was not the one who set up the comparison.

God did not ask you to produce a family that outperforms the one next door, and He has never once made a visible differential the grade on a man's obedience. It is written that we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), which is not a slogan about optimism but a statement about which instrument is load bearing, and the same Spirit who breathed it is in this garden, which is why it reads as a correction to a method and not as a comfort.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you a difference will show up if you keep going, and I am not telling you it will not. I have no authority to promise you a visible return on fifteen hundred Fridays and I will not trade you one. What God has done and is doing in that house is His, and He has not undertaken to publish it.

What I can put in your hands is this: fifteen hundred blessings have not come back to God empty, and everybody who has lived in that house for thirty years has grown up inside a hall where somebody stood still once a week and said something good out loud. God's word does not come back to Him void (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and none of that shows over a fence and none of it was ever supposed to.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at that garden table, with the mug gone cold.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that house was built, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit has carried every one of those fifteen hundred Fridays out of that hall. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your faithfulness. There is no missing piece and there never was one.

You have been doing the only part that was ever yours, and the method you used on Saturday could not have detected the part that is God's. Nobody has ever had to see a differential in order for God to have received what was spoken. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what thirty years has done in that house. That belongs to God, and He has not undertaken to show it to you from a garden or from anywhere else, and anybody who offers you an inventory is taking something from you. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: God stopped a whole prophecy to ask who despises the day of small things, and He asked it about people who were standing right there caring very much.

Fifteen hundred Fridays. Do the fifteen hundred and first.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in that hall, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because thirty years produced something anybody can see. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own house is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a comparison that arrived at a barbecue looking like an observation. What God has done in this house is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Comparison I made across a fence on Saturday, you are two ordinary families and you are not a measurement of anything. Scripture says who hath despised the day of small things, and God asked that as a question because somebody had.
  2. Method that can only weigh what shows in a garden on an afternoon, get out of this hall in the name of Jesus. It is written that we walk by faith and not by sight, and that is a ruling about which instrument is load bearing.
  3. Lord, You have gone through this hall fifteen hundred times and never once published what You did. I thank You, because Your face is shining on this house and everybody in it and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and on Friday I am standing in the same place saying it again.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
