Twenty Years in the Text, Never Under It

This message is for the man who has taught the priestly blessing in Numbers 6 for twenty years, who can account for every clause of it, and has never once stood still while somebody said it over him

There are four notebooks on that desk about six verses.

You could teach this passage from a standing start. You know that the verb translated keep carries the sense of guarding a vineyard against thieves and weather. You know the blessing has three lines and that they lengthen as they go, three words, then five, then seven, so that the sentence widens as it is spoken. You have taught that widening to rooms full of people and watched their faces open when they see it.

You know that countenance is the word for face, again, and that the two lines about a face are not repetition but ascent: first light on the face, then the face turned and lifted.

Tonight you are at the desk at half past ten, checking a footnote about the priestly hands, and the lamp is on and the house is quiet, and something arrives in you sideways.

You have never stood still while somebody said it over you.

Not once. Not at your ordination, which was a certificate and a handshake. Not from your father, who was proud of you in a way that never once became a sentence. Not from anybody. You have taught it, footnoted it, defended a translation choice about it in print, and you have never in your life been the person on the receiving end of the words while another human being said them out loud in your direction.

You have been in the text for twenty years. You have never been under it.

Twenty Years in the Text, Never Under It

Speak to them, saying

Let me sit down across from you, because I do not think this is a gap in your learning and I am not going to treat it as one. Scripture is going to do the work here, and the Spirit is going to do it gently, and neither of us has to hurry at half past ten.

First, the obvious thing, said out loud so it stops being an accusation you are half carrying. Your father is not on trial at this desk. A man who was proud without a vocabulary for it is a very common man, and Scripture has never once graded a person on their fluency. Neither is your ordaining committee, who handed you a certificate because that is what committees have. The absence is real, and an absence is not a verdict on anyone.

Now let me read you the line just before the one you know best.

Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee.Numbers 6:23-24

You have footnoted the doubled saying. Now sit under it. The instruction is not teach them this text. It is not understand the widening. It is speak, and it is say, twice over, and then the words are given in the second person singular. Thee. Not to a nation as an abstraction. To one person at a time, who is standing there while it happens.

You are the one that grammar has been aimed at the whole time, and being the person who explains it has never once removed you from the number it is spoken to. That is not a kindness I am offering a tired scholar. That is what the verse does with its own pronouns, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence you have handled a thousand times and turns it, tonight, so that it faces you.

Here is the thing your notebooks cannot do for you, and you know this better than most. When a priest laid hands and said those words, he was not generating anything. He was agreeing out loud with what God had already settled, and the very next verse says God is the one who does the blessing. His mouth was the doorway. God walked through it. Which means if the power lived in the mouth, then a man nobody thought to say it over would be permanently outside a sentence he had spent his life inside, and God has never written a rule with a hole like that in it.

There is no scholar's exemption, and there is no reduced portion for the person who already knows what the words mean. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, past tense, finished, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled thing out of a page and into a man with his glasses off.

Knowing a sentence and being addressed by one

Now let me name the thing precisely, because you are a precise man and a vague comfort would be no use to you at all. What is written is exact, and the Spirit has never needed vagueness in order to be gentle.

There is a difference between knowing a sentence and being addressed by one, and it is not a difference of degree. Analysis puts you outside the utterance; that is what analysis is for, and it is honest work, and yours has fed people, and Scripture never once called it a disqualification. The Spirit has no argument with a careful man. But a blessing is not information. A blessing is a speech act, and a speech act has a target, and for twenty years you have handled this one exclusively from the outside, where the target is somebody else.

Underneath that, if I read you right, is a quieter conclusion: that a man who understands a thing this well has forfeited the right to receive it simply, and that wanting it said over you would be a kind of naivety unbecoming to someone with four notebooks.

That is not rigor. That is a man ruling himself out of his own subject, and what is written never once entered that exemption. The Spirit is here to say so in a room you have studied in for two decades.

God has known your name since before that first notebook was bought, and He has never once confused you with your competence. It is written that He knew you before He formed you (Jeremiah 1:5), a sentence with no clause in it about qualification, and the same Spirit who breathed it is the one holding it up in the lamplight in front of you, which is why it reads as an address and not as a proposition.

And hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the study was wasted or that the years at this desk were a substitute for something. They were not. The widening is real and you were right to teach it. What I am telling you is that the blessing was never a text to be mastered before it could be received, so mastering it never once put you further away.

The word you have been standing beside for twenty years was spoken to you personally, in the singular, long before you learned to account for its verbs. God has blessed us, past tense, in Christ, and His word does not return to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and it is the Spirit's own work to land a sentence on the one person in the room who has never been on its receiving end.

The breakthrough

So here is what is on that desk at half past ten, alongside the footnote.

The blessing exists. God spoke it, He settled it in Christ before you were born, it is written down in a text you can read in the original, and the Holy Spirit is in this study to make it live rather than merely to make it accurate. What was missing was never the blessing, and it was certainly never the understanding. What was missing was a voice aimed at you, and you have a voice; you have been using it in lecture rooms for twenty years.

You are blessed, tonight, at your own desk, and being the person who can explain that sentence takes nothing away from being the person it is spoken to. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling, or a qualification, to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, and God is the one who fills the hand; the Spirit does the carrying, and what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what changes in the department, or whether anybody ever stands you up and says it out loud. That belongs to God, and I have no authority to promise it, and you would identify the overreach immediately. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the instruction was speak, and say, in the singular, to one person standing still, and you are one person, and you are standing still.

Close the notebooks. You have been the priest in this room for twenty years, and His Spirit is here to say the words in your direction. Tonight be the one spoken to.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in the study, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you finally know enough. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to twenty years of standing beside a sentence instead of under it. What God does with the rest of that department is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Twenty years of notes on this passage, you are careful work and you are not the same thing as standing under it. Scripture says speak to them, saying, and God has never once meant that as an exercise.
  2. Exemption I quietly wrote for myself on the grounds of knowing too much, get out of this study in the name of Jesus. It is written that He knew me before He formed me, and that sentence has no clause in it about qualification.
  3. Lord, You are saying it to me now, in the singular, at my own desk. I thank You, because Your face is shining and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing up in my own study to be the one spoken to.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
