Your son is thirty-one and he put a mug down on Sunday and then, without any pause and without looking, moved it onto the coaster.
That is all. That is the whole incident.
He did not glance at you. He was mid-sentence about something at work and he did not break stride. The hand went out, the mug moved four inches, and the sentence carried on.
You have never once told that man to use a coaster. You are almost certain of that. You have never raised your voice in this house in thirty-five years and you would be astonished if anybody could produce an instance.
What you have done is keep a standard. Things are where they belong. Doors are closed. The kitchen is finished before anybody sits down. Nobody has ever been reprimanded about any of it, because it has never been necessary; it is simply how this house runs and everybody in it runs that way now.
And it is a good house. Genuinely. People say so.
But on Sunday you watched a thirty-one year old man perform a small correction on himself in about half a second, in his own childhood home, without any prompting, and you have not been able to put it down since.
You have always called this house peaceful.
You are no longer certain that is the right word.

Two kinds of quiet
Sit down a minute. I am not going to tell you to lower your standards, which is advice that would be no use to you and which you would rightly ignore.
Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit is not standing in that doorway to convict a man for keeping a good house: order is not a sin, and thirty-five years without raising your voice is a considerable thing that a great many households would give a great deal for. Nobody in this house is on trial. Not your son, who moved a mug, and not you.
And nobody else is in scope in this article. Not one word of it is about what anybody else in that family contributes. Your own mouth is the only thing in scope.
Now come and look at a verse about quiet, and notice that the writer distinguishes two things that look identical from outside.
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.Ecclesiastes 9:17
There are two quiets available in any room and this verse is only interested in one of them.
There is the quiet of attention: a room where people are listening, where a wise word can be spoken at ordinary volume and land, because nobody is braced and nobody is managing anything.
And there is the other quiet, which is what a room does when it is holding still. It looks the same in a photograph. It sounds the same on a recording. It is not the same thing at all, and everybody inside it knows the difference and almost nobody names it, because naming it sounds like an accusation.
The writer of that verse knows exactly which one he means. He is describing a room where a quiet voice carries because there is nothing in the way of it.
Your house has one of those two quiets and you have spent thirty-five years assuming it was the first one. That is not me being hard on a man who has kept a good home. That is what is written, and what that verse distinguishes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a tidy living room on a Sunday evening.
Here is what nobody explains about blessing a room. When you speak over that living room, you are not lowering a standard and you are not apologizing for anything. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it, and He does not require the room to be finished first.
A blessing spoken in that doorway is the one thing in your house that has no standard attached to it. Scripture says peace be to this house, which Christ told His people to say on entering houses they had never seen (Luke 10:5), with no inspection first and no conditions, and the Spirit is the one who carries it.
What the mug actually was
Now let me name it precisely, because precision is the only thing you will accept and vagueness would insult you.
That was not obedience and it was not respect, though both of those are also true of your son.
It was a reflex, which is a completely different order of thing. A reflex is what a person develops when a standard is consistent, unspoken, and reliably noticed. It does not require a rule, and it does not require anybody to be told off, and it does not require the standard-holder to be present, and it operates below the level at which the person can decide anything about it.
He was not being careful of you. He was being careful, full stop, in that house, at thirty-one, in half a second, mid-sentence.
And the reason it has stayed with you all week is that you recognized it, because you have one too, and you got it from your own father, and you have never once put those two facts next to each other before Sunday.
That is not a fault and I will not make it one. It is what standards do over decades in a house where somebody is attentive. And what is written never once asked a man to become disorderly before a room could be blessed, and the Spirit is not standing in that doorway with an inventory of your coasters.
God is not asking you to become a different kind of man, and He has never once made your standards, high or low, the condition of His peace resting on a room. It is written that not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 4:6), which is God ruling out human effort and quality as the mechanism, in writing and in advance, and the same Spirit who breathed that is in this living room now.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to leave things out of place on purpose, which would be a performance and your family would find it unnerving within a day. I am not telling you to raise it with your son. And I am not telling you the house will feel different if you say this; I have no authority to promise you an atmosphere in exchange for a sentence.
What I can put in your hands is this: there is one thing that can be said in that room which meets no standard, requires no tidying, and cannot be done badly. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a man saying twelve words in a doorway is doing the only thing in that house that is not being kept to a standard.
So here is what is true in that room, with the lamp on and the coaster where it belongs.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that house was furnished, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is in this living room this evening. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your care for the people who grew up here. What is missing is twelve words that meet no standard at all.
You are the one God appointed to speak over that house, and being an exacting man has never once disqualified anybody from it. Nobody has ever had to be relaxed to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens to that reflex in your son, or whether the quiet in that house ever changes character. That belongs to God, and it may take years and it may take a generation, and anybody who offers you a transformed household in exchange for a sentence is selling you something. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the words of wise men are heard in quiet, and the writer meant the quiet where nothing is in the way and not the quiet where a room is holding still.
You have kept a good house for thirty-five years. Tonight, put something in it that has no standard attached, and let His Spirit carry it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in that doorway, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because your house is in order. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own house is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a half second you watched on Sunday and have not been able to put down since. What God does in this house is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Carefulness I have called order, you are mine and you are not peace. Scripture says the words of wise men are heard in quiet, and it means the quiet where nothing is in the way.
- Assumption of thirty-five years, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. A room holding still and a room at rest are not the same room. It is written that it is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, and God ruled out my standards as the mechanism in advance.
- Lord, You are in this room before I have tidied it and You have never once inspected it first. I thank You, because Your face is shining on this house and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing in this doorway saying the one thing in here that meets no standard.
