My Phone Set the Manners of This House

This message is for the father who has had his phone face down beside his plate at every meal for six years and has just watched his eleven-year-old do exactly the same thing with a tablet, without anybody ever discussing it

It is face down. That was the compromise you made with yourself about six years ago and you have kept it scrupulously.

Face down, screen to the tablecloth, beside the plate on the right. Not in your hand. Not propped. You do not scroll at the table and you never have and you would be genuinely offended if anybody suggested you did.

It is there in case of work. Which is true about two nights a month and is the reason you have given yourself about two thousand times.

And on Tuesday your eleven year old came to the table with a tablet, put it face down beside his plate, screen to the cloth, on the right, and sat down and started eating.

He did not look at it once. Not once, the whole meal. He was scrupulous about it.

Nobody has ever had a conversation with that boy about devices at the table. There has never been a rule in this house. You have never told him it was allowed and you have certainly never told him it was not.

He did not learn a rule. He learned a posture, from watching one man, over six years, and he has reproduced it exactly, including the compromise.

My Phone Set the Manners of This House

The helm is small and the ship is large

Sit down a minute before you set the table. I am not going to tell you to get rid of the phone.

Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not have me making a crisis out of a device: this is not a moral emergency and your son is not damaged. He copied a small thing from a father he watches closely, which is what boys do with fathers they love, and the copying is a sign of the relationship and not a symptom of a problem. Nobody in this house is on trial. Not him, and not you.

And nobody else is in scope in this article. Not one word of it is about anybody else's habits at that table. Your own mouth is the only thing in scope, and that is not a punishment, it is the only thing anybody actually has.

Now come and look at what James says about how a large thing gets steered, and notice what he is actually talking about.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.James 3:4-5

He is not writing about habits or examples or devices. He is writing about the tongue, which is the thing that comes out of a mouth, and he chooses the image of a helm: something disproportionately small that sets the direction of something disproportionately large.

Which is the exact mechanism you just watched operate on a Tuesday, only in a different medium. A very small thing, repeated, quietly steering a household.

And here is the part that turns it from a warning into something you can use. James is not warning you that small things steer houses. He is telling you that they do. And if a phone face down for six years can set a posture without one word being spoken, then a sentence said over that table has at least as much claim to be a helm.

Small things steer houses, and you already have proof of it sitting face down beside your plate. That is not me being clever with a father before supper. That is what is written, and what James's image is about, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a dining table on a Wednesday.

Here is what nobody explains about blessing a table. When you speak over that room, you are not making a rule and you are not correcting anybody. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it, and He does not require you to have solved the device question first.

A blessing spoken at that table is not a policy announcement. Scripture says peace be to this house, which Christ told His people to say on going in (Luke 10:5), and it is a word put over a room and not an instruction issued to the people in it, and the Spirit is the one who carries it.

What six years actually taught him

Now let me name it accurately, because it is not that your son thinks devices are allowed at meals.

He has learned something more precise than a permission. He has learned that at this table, a man keeps one channel open to somewhere else, and manages it carefully and honorably, and is present in almost every other way.

That is a genuinely sophisticated posture and he has it perfectly. He did not get it from a rule, because there was no rule. He got it from six years of watching, which is a far more reliable transmission method than anything you could have said.

And that tells you something worth knowing, which is that this house is being taught constantly by whatever is done in it repeatedly, and that the teaching happens whether or not anybody intends it.

That is not a guilty fact and I will not make it one. It is simply how households work. And what is written never once asked a man to be a finished example before a room could be blessed, and the Spirit is not standing at that table with a list of your Tuesdays.

God is not asking you to be a better model before He will do anything in that room, and He has never once made your consistency the condition of His peace resting on a house. It is written that not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 4:6), which rules out capacity and performance as the mechanism, in writing and in advance, and the same Spirit who breathed that is in this dining room.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to ban devices, or to make a speech about it, or to point out what you noticed on Tuesday, which would land on a boy as a correction for a thing he learned from you. And I am not telling you the table will feel different if you say this.

What I can put in your hands is this: the same house that has learned a posture from six years of a small repeated thing can learn something else the same way, and you already know the transmission works. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and ten words said at the head of a table every evening is a helm.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in that dining room, before the plates come through.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that table was bought, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here at six in the evening. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your presence at that table, which by every account is nearly complete. What is missing is ten words before anybody sits down.

You are the one God appointed to speak over that house, and having a habit you have not solved has never once disqualified anybody from it. Nobody has ever had to be a finished example to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what your son picks up next, or when, or whether you ever see it. That belongs to God, and it may show up in a house you never visit, and anybody who promises you a result in a child is trading in your family. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: a very small helm turns a very large ship, and James said that about a thing that comes out of a mouth.

Six years of face down beside the plate taught that boy a posture. Tonight, put something else at the head of the table.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at that table, out loud, before the plates come through, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have got the phone question right. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own house is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a posture that has been transmitting in this room for six years without one word being said about it. What God does in that boy is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Phone face down beside my plate for six years, you are a habit and you are not the rudder of this house. Scripture says the ship is turned about with a very small helm, and James wrote that about the tongue and not about a device.
  2. Idea that I have to be a finished example before anything good can be said in this room, get off this table in the name of Jesus. It is written that it is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, and God ruled out my consistency as the mechanism in advance.
  3. Lord, You are at this table before the plates come through and You have never needed me to be a better model first. I thank You, because Your face is shining on this house and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and tonight I am standing at the head of it and saying it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
