Bless Not Curse2 Timothy 4:16

My Work, Under Another Man's Name

This message is for the researcher who spent eleven years on a body of work that appeared under a colleague's name with a single line of thanks in the acknowledgments, and who cannot open the book on his own shelf

It is on the second shelf, spine out, and you have not opened it in six years.

Chapter six is yours. Not influenced by you. Not building on your suggestions. Yours: the framework, the two objections and the answers to them, the long example about the harbor, which you constructed over a winter and which he heard you deliver at a seminar in the February.

Chapters two, four and nine have your fingerprints on them in ways only about six people alive could identify.

You are in the acknowledgments. Page xi, second paragraph, in a list of nine, described as a valued colleague whose conversation was a stimulus.

There was no theft in the legal sense. That is what makes it unspeakable. There is no document, no signed agreement, no email that says the thing outright. There is eleven years of a working relationship, an enormous amount of talking, and one man who wrote it down first and put his own name on the front.

Three people know. Two of them have said so to you privately and neither of them will say it in print, and you understand exactly why and you do not hold it against them.

He is retired now. There is a festschrift being planned.

And you are standing in your own room at five in the afternoon looking at the second shelf, and the sentence that has lived in you for six years has just run again, in full, with the page numbers in it.

My Work, Under Another Man's Name

Paul put both sentences in one paragraph

Sit down in that chair a minute and leave the shelf where it is. I am not going to ask you whether you might be overstating it. You have had six years to overstate it and you have been careful.

Let me put the true thing on the table first, because Scripture will not let me be delicate and the Spirit does not require a wronged man to be diplomatic before He will work: chapter six is yours. That is a fact. Nothing here asks you to be generous with the record or to allow that a valued colleague whose conversation was a stimulus is an adequate description of a winter's work. God is not confused about the harbor example.

Now come and look at the end of a letter written by a man in a cell.

At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me.2 Timothy 4:16-17

Read what he does in the space of two sentences.

First he states it, plainly, without softening: no man stood with me, but all men forsook me. He does not say they were busy. He does not say it was complicated. He puts the abandonment on the record, in writing, in a letter he knows will be read by others.

Then, immediately: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. He asks for it not to be counted, and he does not withdraw the first sentence in order to say the second one.

And then, third, the part that holds the whole thing up: Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me. He was not, in fact, alone in that room. The record he is stating is accurate and it is also incomplete, and the missing part is the part with God in it.

You are permitted to state the record and bless the man, both, in writing or out loud, and Scripture has already shown you a man doing it in one paragraph. That is not me smoothing something over for a scholar with a grievance. That is what Paul wrote and in what order, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a room at five in the afternoon.

Here is what nobody explains about blessing a man who did this. When you say a blessing over him, you are not conceding the authorship, and you are not withdrawing what you know, and you are not obliged to say anything warm at a festschrift. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about a man He made. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it. It amends no title page.

A blessing said in your own room does not put your name on that spine, and it was never designed to. Scripture says God will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and make manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5), which is a statement about a disclosure that is coming and about who conducts it, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that live for a man whose two witnesses will not go on the record.

What the sentence with the page numbers costs

Now let me name the thing exactly, because you would see through anything less.

That sentence in you is not vanity, and what is written has never once graded a man for keeping a record, and the Spirit is not scolding a scholar. It is the only surviving edition of the truth. There is a published account and there is your account, and the published one has an ISBN and yours exists nowhere except in your own head, which is why it has to be rehearsed to stay intact. You have not been sulking for six years. You have been maintaining a text.

The trouble with maintaining a text is that it requires reading. And so you read it, at the shelf, in seminars, whenever the field mentions his name, which is often, and will be more often while a festschrift is being planned.

That is not bitterness and I am not going to call it that. It is a scholar preserving a record that nobody else will hold, and what is written never once required a man to be credited before he could be free. The Spirit is not asking you to concede chapter six. He is asking whether the text has to be read aloud in you every time a name comes up.

God holds the whole record, including the winter and the seminar in the February, and He has never once needed your recitation in order to have it. It is written that He brings to light the hidden things and makes manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5), and the same Spirit who breathed that line was present in every room where that work was actually made, which is why it reads as an archive and not as a consolation.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to say nothing, to attend the festschrift, to write a warm tribute, or to give up any claim you might one day make properly and in the right forum. Blessing is not a retraction. It does not forbid you from ever stating your case in print. What I am telling you is that the case and the recitation are two different things, and it is the recitation that meets you at your own shelf at five in the afternoon.

What you say alone in a room is a real thing, and it is complete without that man or that field ever knowing it happened. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and it does not need a footnote to have been said.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in this room, with the second shelf where it is.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before either of you was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here to carry it. What is missing is not the truth about chapter six. What is missing is one sentence in place of a recitation, said out loud, with nobody listening.

You are free to bless a man who has not earned it, and it amends nothing and concedes nothing. Nobody has ever had to feel magnanimous in order to speak God's word over another man. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what happens at that festschrift, or whether the field ever works it out, or whether your two witnesses ever put anything in print. That belongs to God, and He has said what He brings to light and He has not said when. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: Paul wrote no man stood with me and let it not be laid to their charge in the same paragraph, and then he wrote the sentence that was actually load bearing, which is that the Lord stood with him.

That shelf has had your five o'clocks for six years. Take them back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, in your own room, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have finally stopped minding about a spine. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over another man is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a text you have been maintaining alone since the book came out. What God does about that man is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Book on my own shelf with his name on the spine, you are printed and you are not the whole record. Scripture says Paul wrote no man stood with me and asked that it be not laid to their charge, and he put both sentences in the same paragraph.
  2. Recitation with the page numbers in it that meets me at this shelf every afternoon, get out of this room in the name of Jesus. It is written that God brings the hidden things of darkness to light and makes manifest the counsels of the hearts, and He was in every room where that work was actually made.
  3. Lord, You stood with Paul in a court where nobody else did, and You are standing in this room. I thank You, because Your face is shining on me tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am at my own shelf saying his name and the good after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
