The third meeting is the one where you notice you have started using their word.
You are sitting in a small room on a chair meant for a nine-year-old, and there are three of them and one of you, and they are all being extremely pleasant. There is a document. There have been documents before. This one has a table on it, with dates down the side and incidents along the top, and it is a genuinely impressive piece of work.
They keep saying challenging. He can be quite challenging. We find him challenging in unstructured time. Challenging around transitions.
And about twenty minutes in, you hear yourself say it. Yes, he can be challenging at home too.
It comes out of your mouth in their voice, in their cadence, and you sit there with your hands in your lap while the meeting goes on around you, and something in your chest goes very cold and very quiet.
Because he is nine. And at home he is the boy who cried for a week about a bird, and who cannot go past a dog without asking. He talks to you for forty minutes about a video game you do not understand, with his whole face, and he checks whether you are still listening and starts again if you are not.
None of that is in the table. It could not be. That is not what a table is for. But you just handed him over in their vocabulary, in front of three people, and now you cannot get the word back out of your mouth.

Where God's look goes
Let me sit with you in the car park for a minute before you drive home, because I think you have been carrying this since about half past three and you have not said it out loud to anybody.
First, and Scripture will not let me skip it and the Spirit will not let me do it unkindly: nobody in that room is on trial. They are not enemies. A school has to write things down and a table is how a school thinks, and every one of those three people would tell you they want him to do well, and they would mean it. The document is not malice. It is what a system produces. Nobody is being cruel to your son in that building.
But you already know that a table is not a description of a person, so come and look at a sentence about how God sees one.
For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7
That is spoken about a boy who had been left out in a field while his older brothers lined up. The prophet is standing in front of an impressive eldest son, ready to call it, and God stops him and says the thing that reorganizes everything: what you can see is not where I am looking.
He is not saying the outward is a lie. Behavior is real and that table is not fiction. He is saying the outward is not the location of the person, and that God's own attention goes to a place no meeting can get to.
God's look at your son goes somewhere no document in that building can reach, and it has been going there since before he could speak. That is not me being warm with an upset mother in a car park. That is what is written, and what the verse says the LORD does and where He does it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a woman sitting in a Vauxhall at four o'clock.
Here is what changes bedtime tonight. When you speak a blessing over that boy, you are not arguing with the school and you are not overwriting the table. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about him. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. Which means it does not have to be a defense, and it does not have to be a correction of anybody, and it does not require his day to have gone well.
You have a word to say over your son that is not a report on his behavior, and it stays true on the days the table gets longer. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), all of it, settled, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven and into a bedroom with a nightlight in it.
What their word does when you carry it home
Now let me name the thing that actually frightened you in that meeting, because I do not think it was the document.
It was hearing it in your own voice. A school's word is a school's word and it stays in the building. But a mother's word travels. If challenging becomes the word in the house as well, then there is nowhere in that boy's world where a different description of him is available, and children build their idea of themselves out of the vocabulary they are handed by the people who love them.
You are not a bad mother for saying it. You were sitting on a tiny chair being agreeable in a room of professionals and it is the most ordinary thing in the world. What is written never once required a mother to perform in a meeting, and the Spirit is not standing over you about a sentence you said at twenty past three.
Your mouth is the one place in his world where God's description of him can be spoken out loud, and that is not a burden, it is a position. It is written that God told the priests to put His name upon the people, and He would bless them (Numbers 6:27), which is God taking the blessing as His own work and giving a person the saying of it, and the same Spirit has been running it that way ever since.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to stop working with the school, or that the table is nothing, or that his behavior does not need help. It does, and you know it better than anybody, and pretending otherwise would not be love. What I am telling you is that the help and the description are two different objects, and it is the description you have the power to keep true.
What you say over him at bedtime will stand over his life whether he remembers hearing it or not. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and that is not a promise about how school goes next term, which is not mine to give you. It is a promise about what happens to a word of His once it has been spoken, and the Spirit is the one who carries it.
So here is what is true, sitting in that car park with the engine running and the heater on.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that boy was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here to carry it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your love for him. What is missing is thirty seconds in a dark bedroom with no reference to his day in it.
You are the one God appointed to speak over your son, and coming out of a difficult meeting has never once disqualified anybody from it. Nobody has ever had to have a good day to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens at school. That belongs to God, and I have no authority to promise you a better table next term, and you have sat through enough optimism in enough small rooms. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: man looks on the outward appearance, and God does not, and He has been looking at the part of your son that nobody in that meeting has ever met.
They have their word for him. Tonight, in the dark, give him yours.
Declare this over yourself
Say these tonight, standing in the kitchen after he is asleep, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you handled that meeting well. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own son is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a word that came home from a school in your own voice this afternoon. What God does in that classroom is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Word they wrote about him in three meetings, you are their file and you are not my son. Scripture says man looks on the outward appearance but the LORD looks on the heart, and God has been looking at the part they never see.
- Fear that I have handed my boy over in somebody else's vocabulary, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. It is written that God puts His name on His people and does the blessing Himself, and my mouth is where that gets said in this house.
- Lord, You look at the place no meeting can reach, and You have been looking at him since before he could talk. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my son tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am going up those stairs to say it in the dark.
